They're lighter, feel better built, feature a more balanced sound profile (though still bass heavy) and include an app that allows for some audio adjustments. These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0 which supports SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter can transfer high-resolution music, though you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between the two when required. This feature can be enabled via the Sony Headphones Connect App and is very effective.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond faster to tapping on panels and are simpler to manage when making a phone call or listening to music. Sony has also added an option that makes voices sound more clear and precise on calls which is noticeable and a nice addition.

Although the WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, they are some of the best wireless headphones we've ever tried. They're comfortable, good to the touch, and have an excellent battery that lasts more than 30 hours continuously. They can also be used in a passive manner with the TRS cable, which is ideal if you're traveling or need to save power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also have an application that lets you adjust their audio performance, and their EQ settings are more flexible than the B&W's. The B&Ws are better built, and can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. 2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the most recent version of a headphone that became an essential for commuters and travelers around the globe. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, adding USB-C, improved noise cancellation and longer battery life.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones have an elegant design and feel that oozes quality. The headband, constructed of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of steel at pivot points. It also has the familiar ratcheting mechanism when you expand or retract your ear cups. The cups are cushioned and feature soft pads that are comfortable to wear over your ears without putting pressure on your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. They can be used while wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise-canceling works even when they're not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones however, the QC45s don't provide the best sound quality at this price point. The frequencies are fairly flat and lack the details that higher-end headphones may be capable of bringing out. The higher registers tend to be boosted and is suitable for most music but can become a problem for more delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is great, but it lacks punch.

One feature that's missing is the possibility of paused playback when you take the headset off. This is a standard feature in this price range and something that Bose's competitors have long offered. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app but it would be nice to have a manual control.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, including multipoint and more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s have four microphones built-in to hear your voice when on the phone. They have excellent call quality, however they don't let you muffle the sound during playback like other wireless headphones. Update: As of February 2022, a firmware upgrade to the QC45s offered manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcome improvement.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are well-known for their comfort and style that let listeners know that they're listening to something special. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. The Bathys have a very good battery performance, with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got a bit more from them, with over 40 hours on average out of one charge. Bathys over-ear headphones perform well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient noise by 9 decibels on average. This isn't as impressive a result as the ANC in the Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless but it's still pretty effective.

The Bathys headphones performed well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was largely similar to the SoundGuys headphone curve with minor differences in the mids and bass. They have a deep, bass-filled sound profile that adds a lot of boom to the mix, but can sometimes make vocals and instruments such as cymbals sound veiled.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, meaning you can wear them in public without worrying about others hearing your music. The microphone is able to be used to record via Bluetooth with just a little distortion between the mid-treble as well as the treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new update to the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry into the category. The new model improves on the previous model with more sleek design, better gesture controls and massive battery life.

The improvements are subtle, but can make for an over-ear set of headphones that feels like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with an outer case that protects them while on the move. The Momentum 4s are device-agnostic, like many other Bluetooth headphones of recent years, such as those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They can be used with Apple iPhones and Android phones, but do not have the AirPods additional features such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious change in this model is the huge battery, which promises up to 60 hours of playback time with noise cancellation activated. This is nearly twice the amount of the competition and enough to allow you to travel for a longer period of time without having to search for an outlet.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget and Engadget, gave the headphones an 82 percent score. He noted their sound quality and ANC features as strengths. His only complaint is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and the treble, which means that orchestral pieces tend to sound flat, not grand. The bass is smooth and well-rounded however, it can be overemphasized, which can lead to fatigue in songs that have heavy bass lines, like the drums in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals also sound sizzled rather than full and there's no sense of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s are a comfortable fit and shouldn't put too much pressure on your neck or ears. They can be a bit fidgety when you wear them around the home or for long listening sessions. They will move around on your head and make intense head movements. This can cause them unexpectedly wake up and can cause distraction during music or calls. They will shut down automatically after 15 minutes, and can be switched off manually by pressing the power button.
