The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears PX7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more background noise. The B&Ws come with an EQ that is more flexible, as well as an app that allows you to tweak the audio performance. But the B&Ws have more robust design and they can connect with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD and have an AI-driven engine that attempts to scale compressed music up to high resolution. This is referred to as DSEE Extreme and it does an excellent job of improving the clarity of music, especially when listening to lossless files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the latest iteration of a headset that became an essential for commuters and travelers from all over the world. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made the predecessor so popular, and adds the USB-C port, which is better at cancelling noise and a longer battery lifespan.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones feature a premium look and feel that oozes quality. The headband, which is made of plastic, offers an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. It also features the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract your ear cups. The cups have soft cushioned pads that fit comfortably over the ears and do not apply pressure on your head. When folded, they weigh 238 grams. You can use them while wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise-canceling works even when they are not on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are dull and lack the details that headphones with higher prices might be able to bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is acceptable for the majority of music but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is great, but it lacks punch.

The ability to pause the playback after removing the headset is a feature that is missing. This is a feature that Bose's rivals have provided for several years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app but it would be nice if there was a manual control.

The QC45s also come with four built-in microphones that listen to your voice during calls. They have excellent call quality, however they don't let you silence the voice when playing back as other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s in February 2022 introduced manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

Their first attempt at wireless headphones that cancel out noise the Bathys, are a stunning set of cans that look and sound amazing. They come with a top-quality USB DAC built in, which means you can use them both for wired and wireless listening.

The Bathys come with a great battery performance, with Focal promising 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got a bit more, with over 40 hours on average out of one charge. If you require a recharge, there's an indicator light on the right earcup that turns red when the earphone needs to be charged.

They have a decent amount of features for a pair of headphones of this price, including support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select your source device every time you need to listen). They also have a built-in mic that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones also have an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to control your music and take calls.

For over-ear wireless headphones The Bathys are very good in our test of noise cancellation, reducing the background sound by around 9 decibels per hour on average. They aren't as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless but it's still very effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys were a good overall performer with a frequency response that mostly matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with just minor deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys are bassy sound profile that can make instruments, vocals and cymbals appear obscure.

You can wear them wherever without fearing that other people will hear your music. Their microphone is of decent quality of recording via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new version of the company's top Bluetooth headsets. The previous model, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry in the class. The latest pair improves on the previous generation with more sleek design, better gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The changes are subtle but can make for an over-ear pair of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them when on the move. The Momentum 4s are also compatible with all devices, just like other Bluetooth headphones of recent years, such as those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. This means they work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they do not come with the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked spatial audio) that are available on the AirPods.

The most obvious improvement here is the massive battery that promises up to 60 hours of playback time with noise cancellation enabled. This is more than what the majority of the competition can offer and is enough for a multi-day trip without worrying about finding a power outlet to charge them.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating, citing their audio quality and ANC as particular strengths.
