Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

The replacement process is simple with a paperclip: Take the existing battery out and insert the new one (refer to your owner's manual to determine which kind of battery you require) and then secure it back into the correct position.

Keys

There are two types of transponder chip, the first is called the 80-bit while the other is known as the circle + (General Motors). The first is reusable but must be delocked with a special device to function in a different compatible vehicle. The latter type is more difficult, as the older keys are usually broken or drilled through, or thrown away when key cases are replaced. They can be salvaged, however for use with an ad-hoc key that doesn't require a battery in order to function.

Immobiliser Systems

An immobiliser is a digital security device which prevents thieves from opening your car. It works by sending an electronic signal from the vehicle to the key every time you attempt to start it. The electronic chip in the key responds by transmitting a unique code that must match the one of the vehicle in order for it to start. If the codes do not match, the engine will stop immediately and prevent theft of your car.

Modern smart keys and fobs feature embedded transponder chips that stores security information in a format that cannot be easily duplicated. When your key or fob is put into the ignition, it transmits this code to a receiver inside the ECU. The ECU is able to compare this code with the one stored in its memory, and it activates the fuel system and the ignition circuit if they match. If the codes do not match then the engine will not start, even if the ignition circuit is damaged by a thief.
