How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane can be a nuisance. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows to reap benefits like more comfort, higher potential for resales, and less bills.

It's a task you can tackle yourself at only a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or Window Seal Replacement two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with modern insulated or tempered glass can increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while preserving the historic integrity of older homes. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair a window pane. Remove any broken glass pieces that remain. This can be done with a pair of pliers, but a flathead screwdriver can also work in a pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives, to take away any old putty remaining around the frame and the window sash. Take your time and work slowly, taking care not to break the existing window sash. It is best to work on a stable ladder instead of the ground and to place someone on the sash to help hold it in place.

After you have removed all the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction and contraction, subtract 1/8 inch from the measurements of width and height. These measurements can be sent to a home center or hardware store to have a piece cut of glass that is in stock to the correct size. You can cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

Take the dimensions of the frame and write down accurate measurements. These measurements can be taken to a home center or hardware store, and the new pane will be cut to a smaller size. This will ensure a tight fit, and allow for expansion and contraction.

Once the glazing compound has dried it's time to put in the new window sash. First, you need to coat the wood with an even layer of linseed. This will keep the new putty from taking in the moisture and deteriorating and cracking with time. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your putty knife, then employ the chisel or back end of the putty knife to gently hammer the new sash and glazier's point into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process every 10 inches around the frame's perimeter.

Putty

A hurled baseball or an unintentional rock, or falling branch could cause a window pane to crack or break. Luckily, most windows can be repaired by simply putting a new piece of glass in its place. The glass is held in position by a small metal clip, also known as a glazier's point and putty. This compound is also known as glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first remove the old one and clean up the area using an abrasive and a pull-type paint scraper or the wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses when you work. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll need use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before taking it off.

If you are planning to replace the original sash, gently remove any molding pieces that are used to secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready to receive new caulk. Once the sash is reinstalled, you can apply a silicone caulk on the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't leak over time or discolor.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves on the sash where the glass is located. If they're hard to chisel out, you can try holding a hand tool like a heat gun to soften them before you do. When using a heated tool, be sure to avoid damaging the sash or its railings.

After the old glaze points and putty have been removed prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it into a 1/2-inch thick. Then, you can press it into the rabbets, where the glass will sit. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If necessary gently tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has damaged, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue based on solvents to seal the crack before pressing it in the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you will need to apply putty to keep water from getting in. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film off of the glass and allow it to dry completely before painting. Paint before the putty has dried completely. It will not form a good seal and may leak or discolor with time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, you might be worried about the expense of replacing it. In reality, replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be expensive if you do it on your own. Even double glazed window replacement-paned windows can be replaced for a fraction of the price it would cost for a professional.

If you are working on a large-sized window, ensure that it is securely attached to the frame. By using the correct tools and techniques you can make this task relatively easy and quick.

When you're ready to start with the removal of the old window by prying out the glazing points of metal that are connected to it. These are tiny triangles of metal that act as "nails" that hold the window in place. They are placed beneath a layer of glazing putty, which is then cured to form a solid, formed wedge that holds the window firmly in place and hides the window's points.
