Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob

The key fob allows you to lock and unlock your vehicle from the distance. It also allows you to activate the panic button on your car that can deter break-ins.

If your fob stops working the device can be repaired with some simple steps. Check that the battery is brand new. Remove the battery from the ignition, and then press the lock button swiftly three times.

Battery

The most simple way to fix the battery of your key fob is to replace it. The key fob is powered by a small coin-shaped battery (CR2032 or 2025) that can be located in the majority of general stores, home improvement stores, and auto parts stores. Use a brand new battery. Old batteries can damage the circuit boards and cease to be useful.

You'll want to start by prying the fob open. It may be tight, but with the help of a flat screwdriver you will be able to break the two halves. Attach the screwdriver to the seams on both sides of the fob, and lift the clips that secure it. They can easily break so be cautious and work slowly.

Reassemble the fob after replacing the battery and test to determine if it functions as it should. If it doesn't work you can try pressing the button several times and checking that the contacts are clear. You can also test it with a spare fob to see if the problem is specific to your key. If it isn't it could be another reason for why your key fob isn't functioning. For example it could be because the button is worn out. This will only make the button function occasionally and not always.

Interference

The key fob uses a tiny transmitter to send a short-range radio signal to a receiver inside your car. Its function is to permit your car to recognize the fob and then open its doors when you are near it and start when you press the ignition button in.

The issue is that interference can occasionally interfere with the transmission. For instance, if you are using your second-generation Apple Pencil charged while you're holding the fob, it might prevent you from unlocking the car (via iGeneration).

Other electronic devices operating on the same frequency can also interfere with the fob's signal. This includes garage door openers and tire-pressure monitoring systems. It's even possible that an RF transmitter inside your home could be interfering with the fob's signal, but this would be difficult to determine without a professional test.

Your key fob might require reprogramming. The transmitter in your key fob has to be recognized by the replacement mini keys's receiver. A unique code is then used for each pairing. Fobs are typically reprogrammed when they're disconnected or replaced, when you purchase a new one or, in rare cases when the battery is changed. To reprogram a fob follow the steps in the user's manual of your device or contact a dealer for assistance.

Faulty chip

Modern electronic key fobs provide convenience and functionality over traditional manual keys, however they are also susceptible to damage. One of the most common issues is a damaged chip that will prevent your key fob from working properly. This is usually a straightforward fix.

If your fob is constantly failing to turn on your car, this is an indication that the chip is faulty. The problem can usually be fixed by replacing the battery, which is inexpensive and easy to locate at an hardware store or big-box retailer. To avoid problems in the future, make sure you purchase the right battery for the car model you have.

The fob shouldn't be exposed to water or soapy residue. Water can cause corrosion and disrupt the circuitry. If this is the case, you'll need to clean the circuit board with isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner prior to putting in a new battery.

It is a good idea to test the operation of the fob prior driving the vehicle. Check the voltage of the new battery using a voltmeter to ensure it's safe. First, check that the battery inside your key fob remains in good condition and hasn't been replaced. Once a new battery is installed it cannot be reprogrammed and would need to be replaced again.

Once the key fob has been programmed it will then be capable of communicating with the car and control its functions, including air conditioning, radio and even the windows and sunroof. You can also enable the comfort access feature which means that the door for the driver will unlock and close automatically when you enter the vehicle and the seats will slide up and down to get you in and out. The key fob will enable the climate control settings and mirrors to suit your preferences and even alter the radio's settings.
