The key fob is an easy option to lock and unlock your car from the distance. It can also activate your car's panic button which will deter burglaries.

If your fob stops working, it can be fixed by following a few simple steps. First, make sure that the battery is new. Remove the battery from the ignition, and then press the lock button fast three times.

Battery

Change the battery in your key fob is one the easiest fixes. The device uses a small coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) which is typically easily found in general stores or home improvement stores and some auto parts stores. Make sure to use a new battery. Batteries that are old can damage the circuit boards and become less useful.

It is also possible to test it using an additional key fob to determine whether the issue is specific to that particular key. If it is not, there could be another reason that caused the key fob to not work. For example it could be because the button is worn out. This would only cause the button to function only occasionally, not all the time.

Interference

The key fob utilizes a tiny transmitter to send a radio signal of a short range to a receiver within your car. Its function is to permit your car to recognize the fob and then open its doors when you approach it and also start when you push the ignition button within.

The issue is that interference can occasionally interfere with the communication. If you charge your second-generation Apple Pencil while holding the fob (via iGeneration) it may prevent you from unlocking the vehicle.

Other electronic devices that operate on the same frequency as the fob may also interfere with its signal. Garage door openers, or tire pressure monitoring devices can be affected. It is also possible that an RF receiver inside your home could interfere with the fob's signal but this would be difficult to determine without a professional test.

It's possible that your fob is simply reprogrammed. This process requires the transmitter inside your fob to become recognized by the receiver inside your Mini cooper key fob and a specific code is used for each pairing. Fobs are typically reset when they are disconnected or replaced, when you purchase a replacement or, in certain cases when the battery is changed. Follow the steps in the owner's manual to program a key fob, or consult a dealer.

Chip that isn't working
