We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of maneuvering around toys that are placed on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out from under things. It also has a camera that can snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts to drift away from its original location.

iRobot also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that don't have bristles and therefore are more likely to resist knots than earlier models. These are also a little taller than previous rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across a variety of floor kinds.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models of high-end quality by its new dirt detection feature, Top Robot vacuum which uses cameras to detect embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous version that relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and scrub the entire area three times at various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It was successful in picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and it's even far from being as costly as some of the other top Robot Vacuum-of-the-line models in this list. It's got plenty of features that we'd expect to find in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration you might find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get up and running immediately. After removing the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all that you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's full of debris, and it has indicators on the top of the device to indicate that its bin is full, it needs to be recharged, or its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
