It also switches between mopping and vacuuming with the press of one button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, it automatically emptys itself into a larger waste container above its charging dock.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It can easily sling debris under the side brushes and into the 400ml dustbin. The Tyres of the X8, despite their circular shape, are good at grabbing edges and corners. It's not the best cat litter picker, though as our tests show it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is a good option for spills that are not too large but you cannot regulate the amount of water it is using and this will reduce its effectiveness for more severe staining. It does, however, do an admirable job of removing pet hair, with a higher pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, powerful appliances. It has a beautiful design, a great navigation system and an impressive cleaning power. However, it has a few operational oddities that prevent it from being ranked as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

This budget robovac that looks like any other, but comes with some extra features and better performance. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home, and uses them to avoid obstacles and navigate. It can even identify common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors together with a bump sensor and an infrared drop sensor which keeps it from falling down steps make it one of the most flexible vacs we've tried.

In our tests, it effortlessly climbed over thick shag rug and didn't end up stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation skills were also impressive and its overall score on carpet and bare floors topped the competition, and it picked up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our laboratory test samples.

Its controls are a bit more basic than those of the competition; there's a round cleaning button on the top and you can access it via the app or by voice command with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, set up no-go zones, and look up its history of cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. 5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a simple robotic vacuum that is simple and has no frills for a reasonable price, the Eufy 11S is a great option. It lacks some of the smart features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models but if you're not looking for those functions you can save a little cost with this model.

This robot vacuum for stairs is easy to use and set up.
