You can set up the bot by plugging it into its base, and connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi and giving it a name the D4 etc.). Once the D4 is fully charged it's time to begin a cleaning process.

Once you've got the D4 running, you can use the app to create an automated schedule or manually start cleaning whenever you want. You can also control it using your voice via Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you own an Apple Watch you can start cleaning by tapping your wrist.

This model did well in our lab tests on both hard and carpeted floors, capturing 91.3% combined of debris from serpentine paths. It's not as effective at cleaning edges and corners as higher-end models. The sensors on the sides of the D4 keep it around 1.5 inches from walls. Also, it doesn't have the side-sweeping brushes found on all but the most expensive robotic cleaners. Its raised turret also means it isn't able to be used under furniture with low clearance. However, it does support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to inform the D4 not to travel there. Its battery life of 75 minutes is also average. This is a small price to pay for the convenience offered by this model.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most popular robot in the company's lineup with a promise of top performance and a host of connected features. The retail price of the 980 is $899 or PS899 but you can often find it for less online.

The 980 is the most sophisticated of our top choices. It has a HEPA-filter that can capture micronized dust and allergens, which can improve the air quality in your house. It also supports a wide variety of floor Lidar vacuum surfaces such as tile and hardwood.

3. iRobot Roomba 985

iRobot Roomba 985 is a product designed to help you keep your floors clean and beautiful, with its powerful cleaning capabilities, intelligent navigation, and integration with other iRobot products. Its unique dirt detection system alerts you when areas require extra attention. Smart sensors keep it away from dangers and stairs. It also automatically recharges and resumes cleaning until the job is done. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology let it navigate through the entire level of your home, keeping an eye on the places it's been and which rooms it's yet to clean.

Its low profile makes it easier to get under furniture and other objects where pet hair, dust, and dirt often hide. It also removes dirt from corners and edges, unlike many robot vacuum lidar vacuums.
