The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards is a wild automobile. It's among the first hybrid vehicles to use supercapacitors.

A 34-hp electric motor that is integrated into the automated manual transmission powers the Sian to speeds of up to 80 mph when the V-12 is in charge. This system makes the car more efficient and allows it to accelerate instantly.

Forged Composites

The Sian's hybrid system has another trick in its sleeve it's a supercapacitor. It can recharge faster than lithium ion batteries and the car can run for up to 63 second using electricity.

Lamborghini's forged composites are key to making this happen, and the material may eventually be used in regular production vehicles. It starts as a sheet of uncured plastic that is mixed with random lengths of carbon fiber strands. It's not as appealing as the pre-woven carbon fiber, which are pre-impregnated in resin, but it's more flexible and lighter.

Operators cut the carbon fiber to the desired shape, put it in the hot press mold and squeeze it with heat. It takes just a few minutes but it could take several hours to create the same piece using traditional methods.

Lamborghini claims that its production-friendly material could result in more affordable products in future. It's certainly expensive already but if the manufacturing process can be scaled up, it could save money in terms of both materials and labor. Forged composites are also more flexible than carbon fiber weave and engineers can design complex shapes without the need to add weight or expense.
