These earphones are a significant upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 of late-2018. They appear better and feel more durable and have a more polished look. The battery life on these headphones is excellent, too. The Q30 lasted an hour longer in our tests when ANC was turned on than its competitors. This gives you plenty of time for a long flight or a day at the office. They can be charged quickly with the included USB-C cable and you'll be able to see a warning when they're approaching empty.

The headphones are a little bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their exceptional sound is the reason they stand out.

Sony headphones are known for their high-end quality and the WH1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It is at the top portion of the headphones for over-ear, and is slipping into the 'luxury lifestyle' sector where brands like Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. This means that the XM5s come with a high cost, but should you be able to afford it, there are better wireless over-ear headphones on the market.

The XM5s have a lot of features that make life easier for the listener, and also automate tasks that they'd otherwise need to perform manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music compressed to near hi-res) as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are included. This lets high-quality music to be streamed at bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

As with the previous generation of WH headphones the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. They are among the top in cutting down on the constant drones that are heard in subway and train carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at isolating the listener from the hum of busy streets and airports.

The sound quality is also great. The XM5s do not have as high a resolution in the low frequency range as the XM4, but they do have an increased sense of clarity and openness. The bass in Rage Against the Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys power and clarity but without affecting the rest the music. In the same way, Massive Attack's grooving Angel shows off the XM5s ability to create precise and precise bass notes.

The battery life is fantastic, with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is on and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is more than enough for a weekend trip or a long period of use.

The XM5s aren't water resistant or dust resistant. Sony recommends not sweating in the XM5s or taking them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for some people, but it could be a problem for those who spends much of their time in the gym or lives in a rainy city.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones which feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They have 40mm dynamic drivers designed by Apple with a neutral audio profile that concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either ends of the spectrum. This makes them ideal for both music and movies. They also have better sound quality than many rival headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and are comfortable to wear over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or forehead. Ear cups can be rotated and tilted to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges feature a solid but not overly strong clamping force, which ensures that the ear cups remain in place during listening sessions.

A small button at the the right ear cup allows you to switch between noise cancelling modes. It also has a pushable Jog-dial-like button, akin to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can twist for volume control and press it once, twice or thrice to playback control. Siri is activated by pressing and pressing the button. The buttons are well-placed and easy to use, but I missed having a power button to turn off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones go into standby mode when removed from your ears or when they are put in their case. They return to life when you put them on your head.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which utilizes the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine where you're moving, then repositions sounds to appear as if they're coming from those locations. This creates a theater-like experience with videos and movies recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. The only catch is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able experience it on other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd be a bit disappointed for spending $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better in the next year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery performance, making it difficult to justify the additional expense for most people.
