What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys have chips inside that are unique to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and turning on the car.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal containing an eight-digit number code whenever it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as the SQUAWK code and it is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit an exact message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is not able to speak to the radio. They are vital for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder, which responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft on a busy screen.
