How to replace window handles Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can be a nuisance. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows and enjoy benefits such as more comfort, higher potential for resales, and less costs.

You can do it yourself for a only a fraction of the cost it would cost to employ an expert. You'll need only the proper tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated can improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the historical integrity of older homes. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can replace windows with ease. You will also require a replacement window pane, glazier's tips, pliers, and latex glazing putty. If you need to you may use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Before starting, wear protective gloves and goggles since working with broken glass could cause injuries.

Take away any broken glass pieces that remain. It is best to use pliers for this, but a flathead can be useful as well. Utilize a wood chisel or putty knives, to take away any old putty remaining around the frame and the window sash. Be careful and slow and be careful not to damage the old window sash. This is best done on a ladder, not on the ground. Also, have someone below the sash ensure it is held steady.

Make sure the window frame is ready to receive the new pane when you have removed the old glue. Measure the width and height of the opening for the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be sent to a home center or hardware store to have cut a piece of glass stock to the proper size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself, if you have the tools you need.

Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. You'll need a heating gun when the window is fixed into the frame.

If you are planning to Replace window pane the original sash in the future, take care to remove any pieces of molding that hold the old pane in place. Then you can sand the sash down to ensure it's level and ready to be re-caulked. Once the sash is re-installed, apply a new caulk made of silicone around the glass to ensure that it won't leak or discolor in time.

If they're hard to chisel out, try holding an instrument like a heat gun over them to soften them before you do. After the old points of glazing and putty have been removed prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your fingers, and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets, where the glass will be placed. The glass must be positioned against the putty on both sides. If necessary, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you will need to apply putty to keep the water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before painting. Paint before the putty is completely dry. It won't form a good seal and could leak or discolor with time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. It's true that replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be expensive when you do it on your own. In fact, even a double-pane window can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of an expert.

If you are working with large glass windows first ensure it is securely fixed to the frame. With the right tools and techniques you can complete this task easily and quick.

When you are ready to begin taking down the old window pane. Take out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are basically small metal triangles that act as "nails" that hold the window in in the wood frame. They are submerged under a bead of glazing putty, which hardens into a solid, molded wedge which holds the window in place and hides the edges.

After removal of the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint that has been used, and sand the rabbet grooves in which the glazing points were. Sand them down to bare wooden surfaces, allowing you to paint the frames with the same shade. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil on the wood that is not sanded down to help extend its lifespan.

The next step is to determine the size of the window opening. You'll need to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening as well as the thickness of the old pane. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure that you get the exact measurement for the new pane. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. You can bring these measurements to a hardware or home improvement shop and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
