1. iRobot S8

This smart robot mop and vacuum combo is a great choice for many households. It is able to vacuum and mop well, has excellent navigation with both GPS and laser sensors and offers a broad range of features and controls that are accessible through the app. It comes with a useful feature that lets you create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and Keep Out zones in areas where you do not want it to go. It also gets software updates, similar to the other Roomba products, that enhance it over time.

It's expensive however, it's also one of the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has evaluated. It's got a huge battery that can vacuum the entire house in less than two hours. It has a wide range of other features that make it an excellent option for most homes, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses both a camera and processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects such as power cables. It is not as accurate at detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While the Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in low-cost robot vacuums it's never offered an all-in-one model which can also mop. That's changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features that can compete with more expensive models.

Eufy's main selling point with this device is its laser navigation. The X8 uses laser mapping technology that is more precise than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to create an extensive map of your home and can store multiple maps. This is perfect for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a good vacuum on floors with no dust that can carry debris under its side brushes and into the 400ml dust bin with ease. The Tyres of the X8, despite their circular shape, are very good at grabbing corners and edges. It's not the best cat litter eater, however our tests have shown it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. This is great for spills that aren't serious, but you cannot regulate the amount of water it uses. It's effective at picking up pet hair. It has a higher percentage of hair removal than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, powerful appliances. It is a stunning design, superb navigation and an impressive cleaning power. It has a few oddities in its operation, which prevent it from being named the top smart robot vacuum.

Like iRobot's latest models and models, the RX2 features a dual-sensor mapping system that utilizes the LIDAR sensor to map a room and three 3D scanning cameras that can detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room is identified, you can designate virtual no-go areas and preferred sections to the robot. You can also begin cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, see live feeds from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.

The RX2 has excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions instantly. And its sweeping and suction power are top-notch and cleans up surface debris from carpets with medium piles and dust in bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. Like many other robots that vacuum and mop, it's not a good climber and has trouble with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

Many people purchase robot vacuums for the convenience of setting up a schedule on an app, only to forget about them for weeks. But it's important that a robot can accomplish the task and that's the reason our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most popular models to help you select the best one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac is a robot that looks just like the other, but has some extra features and better performance. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2-D maps of your home and makes use of to navigate and avoid obstacles. It also has more advanced automation features than most competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary lines using its mobile app. It's a capable robot vacuum, even though its app isn't the most responsive and the 980 spins out when it comes across cables.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it makes use of its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home.
