The design of the D4 is akin to the D6, except for the absence of shiny black plastic cladding. Instead matte finish that doesn't attract dust and other debris separates the upper surfaces of the D4. A disc with a raised design that has the word "neato" and a logo on it, rests atop this round robot vacuum cleaner lidar. It hides the laser which enables its navigation.

Like all Neato vacuums the D4 starts its cleaning routine by driving around your home to determine its layout. Although it appears odd, there's a method behind this madness. It maneuvers around corners and walls by using a combination of bumping and laser sensors.
