Place the fob's face up on a clean surface. Find the button that will release it. Place a coin in between the cover of the fob and the fob, and carefully pull it up.

Unlocking the Door

To press the manual lock/unlock switch hold your key fob with the Volvo logo side up. Find the black button at the edge of your key fob, and gently press it. This will open the cover that hides the manual key blade. You will require a flathead screwdriver or coin to flip the cover counterclockwise, so the arrow is aligned with "open."

The Engine is Ready to Start

Modern Volvo key fobs offer an unbeatable level of convenience and functionality that is not available with traditional manual keys. However, like any battery-operated electronic device key fobs can lose its charge or stop working after a certain period of time. If you've noticed that your key fob is less responsive when you press the lock or unlock buttons, that's a good sign that it's time to replace the battery.

You can enable this feature with the key fob if the vehicle is equipped with a dealer-installed Engine Remote Start. The car will be heated or cooled to the same temperature it was set to when it was parked and last for up to 15 minutes.

Use a fingernail to remove the cover on the back of the key fob. The button should be under the cover at a diagonal, near the edge of the body. Take it off by sliding it downwards and to the right. The cover will come loose and slide away to reveal the manual blade! If you're unable to locate the button, search the now-revealed manual key access for the lever or slot that is hidden.

Closing the Windows

One of the nefarious features on Volvo key fobs is that they allow you to open all windows immediately by using them. This is a great feature when trying to squeeze into a cramped parking spot, or even simply when you want to get some fresh air in your cabin while driving.

Press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote control for four seconds. This will lower all the windows, and also the sunroof if your vehicle has one. Once you're done with your car you can shut the doors by pressing the lock button for four seconds.

You can also use the key fob for activating your car's panic alarm. This will sound an intense, enthralling roar which can deter thieves and allow you to return home in peace after a night out. This feature is useful should you reside in an area that is dangerous or want to ensure the safety of your family when you are away from home.

Opening the Tailgate

Volvo's key fob is packed with many useful features. They are great when you're juggling shopping or helping your kids load up their sports gear after a workout.

For example, if you have the available Hands-Free Power Liftgate with logo projection and adjustable height (if equipped) You can open it using the key fob. You can open the liftgate by pressing the button and then close it by pressing the same button.

Use the key fob to ensure you are ready to start the vehicle. (Don't worry if the battery fails or your vehicle isn't starting because it also has a mechanical key slot). This is just one of the many tips that will benefit your brand new Volvo.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs are much more convenient than a mechanical car key. They don't always work perfectly and batteries can go out. If you're in a hurry, or do not want to visit an establishment to have your key fob reprogrammed you can attempt to make it work at home.

Find a smooth surface and lay out your key fob, battery, and extra keys. Set the key fob with the Volvo logo facing up, then locate a small black button to the left side of the fob and slide it down and to the right. The cover should come loose and fall off leaving the key's mechanical blade beneath it.

You can open all doors as well as the rear gate by pressing the unlock button on the key fob two times. The lock button also shuts the windows and spare Volvo key sunroof (if fitted) by pressing it for two seconds. Connect the battery and the alarm will stop. If not then the owner's manual must include a reset option.
