Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

No matter if you have a standard Lexus key that turns in the ignition, or a smart key for your car that starts by pressing one button, eventually the battery in the fob will deplete. It's easy to replace it with using a paperclip. Pop the existing battery out, insert the new one (refer to the manual for your owner to determine which battery you need) and then secure it back in place.

Keys

On the back of the fob, you will find two or one screw loosen them and place them in a safe place (they're small and easy to lose). Remove the fob, which will reveal an indentation of a circular shape where the key made of metal will be. The battery can be removed with the paperclip, and then insert the new battery, ensuring that it's inserted correctly. Then, clip the inside of the key back together.

Remotes

Replacing a Lexus remote or fob is difficult and requires skilled locksmiths who have the right tools as well as knowledge. Some models require that the transponder chip in the key be reprogrammed to function with the immobiliser system of the car. The chips are programmed using different methods based on the model of Lexus. This is done by using an instrument that sends an electronic signal to the chip that is compatible with the code used to unlock the doors and start the engine.

A transponder is an electronic device with Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) that contains a set of windings (very fine wire that is wrapped around a tube) which look similar to ones found in an electric motor. The windings generate a coded message that the car will read. If the code is correct, the car will start.

There are two types of transponder chip, the one is known as the 80-bit and the other is called the circle + (General Motors). The former is reusable but must be delocked by a special machine to function in a different compatible vehicle. The second one is more difficult to use as the older ones could be damaged, drilled or removed when key cases are changed. They can be salvaged, however for use with the service key, which does not require a battery to function.

Immobiliser Systems

An immobiliser is a security measure that uses electronic technology that deters thieves from starting your vehicle. It works by sending a signal from the vehicle to the key whenever you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside your key then responds with an unique code that must match the one found in the vehicle in order to start. If the codes don't match, the engine will immediately shut down to stop theft.

Modern smart keys and fobs are equipped with an embedded transponder that can store electronic security information in a format that cannot be easily copied. When the key or fob are inserted into the ignition, they send this code to the ECU. The ECU is then able to compare it with the code in its memory and activates the fuel system and ignition circuit if the two match. If the codes don't match, the engine won't be able to start - even if a burglar tries to short-circuit the ignition circuit.
