Jump starting the battery

A lot of people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunk for emergency situations, but jumping a battery in newer vehicles might not be the best idea. These cars are equipped with a variety of digital and computers that communicate with each other. A surge in voltage while a battery is hooked up to another could cause damage to these components, rendering your car unable to drive.

Start the working vehicle and allow it to run for around two minutes before you connect the cables to the disabled one. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the battery that is good. (It will say "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end of the black cable to a clean, unpainted metal surface under the disabled vehicle's hood. An engine block is an excellent choice.
