How to Replace Window Pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane is an issue. This can be an opportunity to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy advantages like improved comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself for a less than what it would cost to hire an expert. You'll only require the appropriate tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with more modern glass that is tempered or insulated will improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the historical integrity of older homes. This will prevent the new putty from drying out or cracking when it absorbs moisture. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or the tip of the blade. Then, use the chisel that is on the back of the putty tool or the back of the putty handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's point into grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches around the frame.

Putty

A baseball hit, a rock thrown in error, or a fallen tree could result in a broken or cracked window. The majority of windows can be replaced easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in place by a small metal clip, referred to as the glazier's point, and putty. This compound is also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using the rag, a pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll need use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before cutting it loose.

If you are planning to replace the original sash, remove any pieces of molding that hold the old pane in place. Then sand the sash to ensure it's level and ready to be re-caulked. Once the sash is installed, you can apply a silicone caulk to the glass. This will ensure that it won't be leaking or fade over time.

Remove the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash where the glass is located. If they're difficult to work out, you can try holding an instrument like a heat gun to soften them up first. When using a heat tool, be careful to avoid damaging the sash or its railings.

Once the old glaze points and putty are removed, prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. It is essential that the glass sits on the putty on each side If you have to do so, gently tap the glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack, you can cover it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you'll require putty to keep water out. After the putty has dried remove the oily film off the glass and allow it to dry completely before you paint. Paint before the putty is completely dry. It will not create a solid seal and may be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken piece of glass. However, replacing one glass pane does not require a huge amount of money if you do it yourself. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced for only a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you are working with a large glass window first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques, you can accomplish this task fairly easily and fast.

Once you're ready to begin, begin by removing the old window pane by prying out the glazing points made of metal that are connected to it. These are essentially small metal triangles that function as "nails" which hold the window in in the wood frame. They are submerged beneath a bead or glazing glue that hardens to a solid wedge that holds the wood frame securely in place and hides the points.
