How to Replace window Pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane is an issue. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows and benefit from improved comfort, increased resale value and reduced utility bills.

You can do it yourself for only a fraction of the cost it would cost to hire an expert. You'll need only the right tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair windows with ease. Alongside a replacement pane, the following items are required for the replacement window handle process: latex glazing putty pliers, glazier's points and an electric heater to warm the old putty, if necessary. Before beginning, wear gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass may cause injuries.

Take out any broken glass pieces remaining. This can be done with a pair of pliers, but a flathead screwdriver may be effective in a pinch. Then, use a wooden chisel, or putty knife, to remove the remaining old putty from around the frame and sash. Be careful to not scratch the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. It is a good idea to work using a sturdy ladder rather than on the ground and place someone on the sash to help hold it steady.

Once you have removed all of the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of width and height. These measurements can be sent to an hardware or home centers store to have an item cut from glass stock to the proper size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself if you have the appropriate tools.

After putting in the new pane, run a small bead of caulking around the edges to ensure it is weatherproof. Install a glazier's point on both sides of the frame. This will help secure the pane. The points shouldn't be too tight that they cause friction between the sash and the frame, but they also shouldn't be too loose.

Before applying the putty on the surface, knead thoroughly until it is smooth and free from lumps. Cut it into pencil-sized pieces. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner and ensure that it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

Putty

A hurled baseball or a rock that is errant or falling branch could cause a window to break or crack. Fortunately, the majority of windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a brand new piece in place. The glass is held in place with a small metal clip called the glazier's pointed and putty, also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using an abrasive, pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves when you work. If not, you'll have to apply putty over the crack to form an impervious seal to keep water out. After the putty has dried clean the oily film from the glass and allow it to dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it will not form an effective seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. But the truth is that replacing a single glass pane doesn't need to cost a fortune when you do it yourself. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of the price it will cost a professional.

If you are working with a large glass window, first make sure it is securely attached to the frame. Using the proper tools and replace window Pane techniques you can make this task relatively easy and fast.

When you are ready to start with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" that hold the window in the frame. They are placed under a bead or glazing putty that hardens to a solid wedge that holds the frame securely in place and hides the points.

After taking off the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves where the glazing points were.
