How to Replace the Ignition Key on a Saab 9-5

The metal component of classic Saab keys is simple to copy and does not pose a significant threat to theft of vehicles. The electronic component of the key-fob has a chip that can recognize the car when the key is put in the ignition switch.

Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft system for over a decade. It's not as secure as a physical lock on the door however it makes the theft of your car much more difficult. Every Saab owner needs to keep an extra Saab key in their car.

The majority of new Saabs come with two keys right from the factory, but you can purchase additional keys at a dealer through a special handheld computer referred to as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is for NG 9-3 cars, which have newer, more modern features that require a separate key-fob, and operate using a different procedure.

How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab XC90

It may be time to replace your SAAB key fob if you are experiencing difficulty turning the barrel of your lock. The process is fairly simple and you don't even need to go to a dealership. Instead you can do it yourself at home with a few simple tools.

The first step is to prepare the new key. Before starting, make sure that the anti-theft feature is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and releasing the handbrake. Insert the key into the ignition and then turn the key to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories but not start the engine. Repeat this 5 times, and then leave the key on the "on" position.

Next, you'll need to find a new case for your old key fob. You can find them at any auto parts store, and they're typically very affordable. Based on the model, you can even get them without any electronics.

To open the case simply push the flathead screwdriver into the slot in the middle. The case will break easily, and once you've done that, you'll have access to the internal electronics. To remove the electronics, use a small screwdriver and try to pry them out in a gentle manner.
