We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that have been placed on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out of the ground. iRobot has also included the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba that do not have bristles which makes them more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can be tucked under beds or couches with low sides. They're specifically designed to make this model more maneuverable on different floor types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other high-end models, though, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera to spot bits of embedded dirt. This is an improvement over the previous version which relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room and scrub the entire area three times at various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored highly on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with extremely thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots on our list despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as other top-of the-line models. It has many of the features you'd expect from a top model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After removing the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will return to its dock when its battery runs out or is full of debris, and it has indicators on the top for when the bin is full, it requires recharging, or its Wi-Fi signal is not working.
