If your Volvo key fob is beginning to work intermittently, that's an indication that the battery is getting old and will need replacing soon.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, find a clean work surface to perform the process. Lay out all the tools needed. Find the battery's hole, and then open it with an open-ended flathead, coin, or any other similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Make sure you wear rubber gloves to avoid damaging the clips or electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery into the socket after the old one is removed. Make sure that the positive side of the battery is facing up and that all clips are seated. Slide the cover towards the key-ring until it loosens and falls off. Take off the cover to reveal the hidden key blade. It can be used to unlock your car from the driver's side if the key fob battery is dead or has been lost.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Locate the small slot that used to house the backup/emergency metal ignition key.
