The XM5s are expensive, but if you can, there aren't many better wireless headphones.

The XM5s have a lot of features that simplify the lives of the listener and automate tasks that they'd otherwise be required to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near-high resolution) is included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This allows high-quality audio to be streamed at bitrates which are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone for making calls without hands.

Similar to the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They're among the top in cutting down on the continuous drones that can be heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s do an excellent job of separating listeners from traffic noises of airports and busy streets, too.

The sound quality is also top-quality. The XM5s may not be as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but they have a higher level of clarity and realism also. For instance, the bass track on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real force and definition, without reducing the other elements. The XM5s also have the ability to deliver precise and tight bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is excellent and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if off. This is enough to cover a weekend getaway or several days of heavy use.

The XM5s do not come with dust or water resistant. Sony recommends not sweating in them or wearing them in the rain. This may not be a big deal for most people however, for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a humid location it could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair over-ear wireless headphones which feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. Apple designed dynamic drivers measuring 40mm with a neutral audio profile that focuses on mids and highs without going overboard. They are ideal for music and movies. They also offer better sound quality when compared with other headphones.

The headphones have a light build that feels comfortable on the head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam covered with woven fabric, and fit comfortably over the ears they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. Ear cups can be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a firm, but not too much clamping force that ensures the ear cups remain in position during listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button located at the top of the right earcup. You can also use the jog dial that is a push-button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume, and press it once, twice, or three times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are well-placed and simple to use, however I was disappointed that there wasn't the power button that could turn off the headphones when not in use. The headphones are put into standby when removed from your ears or when placed in their case. They only come back to life when you put them on your head.

Spatial audio is another great feature. It utilizes accelerometers, gyroscopes and iPhones and iPads to determine where you're moving. Then, it alters the position of the sound to make it appear to come from that location. This creates an immersive theater-like experience for films and videos that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices are able to listen to spatial audio.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off going into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be outdone next year by the second-generation model. AirPods Pro are more expensive, but they have better battery life and advanced features.
