The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a Supercapacitor Hybrid

The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards is a wild car. It's also among the first production hybrids with supercapacitors.

The Sian is powered by an electric motor of 34 horsepower integrated into the automated manual gearbox to 80 miles per hour. Then the V-12 is in charge. This system lets the car accelerate immediately and is more efficient.

Forged Composites

The Sian's Hybrid System has an additional feature in its sleeves that is a supercapacitor. It recharges faster than lithium ion batteries, and the car is able to run for up to 63 second using electric power.

Operators cut the carbon fiber into the desired size, then place it in a hot press mould, and squeeze it with heat. It takes only a few minutes do, whereas it can take several hours to make the same part using traditional methods.

It's not clear whether we'll ever see structurally forged composite components in production cars, but Lamborghini claims that its manufacturing pragmatism implies that the material will eventually find its way into more affordable products. The cost of materials and labor is quite high however, if you can expand the manufacturing process it can save money. Forged composites are also more flexible than carbon fiber weave, so engineers can create complex shapes without the need to add weight or expense.

Carbon Skin

The supercapacitor is housed in the bulkhead between the cabin and engine compartment, powering a 34-hp electric motor mounted to the rear of the vehicle's automatic transmission.

The Lamborghini Sian was based on Aventador SVJ. This means that it runs the same V12 engine. It has a similar suspension and chassis and the same four-wheel-drive. However, the Sian's unique hybrid powertrain is its selling factor.

Ad Personam

Lamborghini has created its first hybrid car with the Sian. It's an impressive statement. The raging bull's latest creation makes use of supercapacitor technology to bring the power-to-weight ratio closer to a manageable level, without reducing its stunningly powerful V-12 engine.

The name Sian is the Bolognese word for lightning, and it's an acknowledgment of the brand's history and future. The alphanumeric suffix of FKP37 honors Ferdinand Karl Piech. He was the one who introduced Lamborghini to the Volkswagen Group and died just prior to the debut of Sian. Only 63 examples were built and all are being spoken for.

Specifications

The Sian is based on the Aventador SVJ. It has the same V12 engine, chassis and suspension. However, it adds an electric motor of a smaller size to make it a hybrid. That means it can run solely with electric power at slower speeds, and it can utilize the gasoline engine to assist with acceleration when needed.

The electric motor is powered by a supercapacitor which is located in the bulkhead between the cabin and the engine compartment. It is three times more powerful and lighter than batteries of similar weight. The system recharges itself through regenerative brakes, so there's no need to connect it to an electrical grid. The e-motor is able to fill up torque for upshifts, which allows the car to go 10 percent faster than it would without it.

Lamborghini claims that the design of its hybrid Sian is intended to convey an open-top feeling of raw energy. The exterior is a blend of orange paint and carbon fibre and the roof has a glass section inspired by the Periscopio found on early Countach protoypes. Other highlights include aluminum detailing, which is painted in Oro Electrum. This is the color Lamborghini uses for its hybrid cars.

Inside the interior, the Sian has a cockpit designed by Lamborghini's head design, Mitja Borkert. The car is a bit more wild than typical for Lamborghini with its many cuts and creases. It's close to becoming absurd, but it's an eye-catching car. The infotainment display is oriented vertically and features a button-free steering that has huge paddle shifters.
