The iRobot Roomba 980, the latest in a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is an essential for every modern home. This model comes with a HEPA filter that can aid those suffering from allergies. Additionally it has a strong battery that can clean for up to two hours and it will automatically return to its dock once its bin is full.

It also has a feature called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it suss out the areas in your home that need attention and make a tidy path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of moving around toys that have been abandoned on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out of the ground. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts to drift from its actual location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers beneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and, robot therefore, tend to resist tangles more than the previous models. The rollers are also larger and can fit under beds or couches that are low. They're designed to make the model more adaptable to different floor types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other high-end models, though, Robot vacuum for pet hair is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very long and thick pet fur that was clumped together.

It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd like to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you might find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and get working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will return to docking station when it is running out of batteries or is full of sand.
