How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob doesn't work and you're not sure why, you can fix it with just a few steps. First, check to make sure it's not the backup remote.

If the backup is able to lock and unlock your car doors then there's a likely issue with the main remote. The most frequent causes of car remote key failure are circuitry or battery issues.

Battery

The battery in the key fob could wear out over time. It is quite simple to change out the battery, however it is crucial to ensure that you use the right type and you can consult the owner's manual or talk to the manufacturer's dealer to find out the kind of battery you require. It is also essential to inspect the battery compartment as batteries that are not working properly can release caustic chemicals that can harm the remote. If changing the batteries does not solve the problem it could be because there are other issues that require attention from a professional. If the buttons are broken or stuck for instance it might be necessary to take the remote apart and rework each component. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Circuitry

Key fobs endure lots of abuse and aren't indestructible. They can break their connection with the receiver in your vehicle due to shocks or low battery, requiring reprogramming. A professional auto locksmith or a main dealer will be able to reprogram your key fob to get it working again. If, in the unlikely event that resetting and fixing your key fob fails it could be the time to replace it all over again.
