How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can be a source of frustration. It can also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows to benefit from greater comfort, a higher potential for resales, replace window pane and less costs.

You can do it yourself at less than what it would cost to employ an expert. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated damaged, cracked or deteriorating, replacing them with newer insulated or tempered glass can increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while preserving the historic integrity of older homes. After you have removed all of the old putty, it is time to prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of width and height. Bring these measurements to an hardware store or home center, and find a piece glass cut to size. You can cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

After putting in the new pane, run a small bead of caulking along the edge to ensure it is weatherproof. Install a glazier's pointing on both sides of the frame. This will help secure the pane. The points should not be so tight that they cause friction between the frame and sash, but they also should not be too loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, gently knead it until it is smooth and free from lumps. Cut it into pencil-sized pieces. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are the small triangular pieces that allow glass to be secured into frames for windows without scratching or damaging the fragile surface. It's easy to understand how to use this nefarious tool, and you'll be able to save money on the cost of a professional installation.

After getting rid of the old putty glazier points as well as any remaining residue, clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Lightly sand the wood into the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth out rough areas. If you sand wood, cover it with painter's tape to prevent accidental damage.

This will prevent the new putty from soaking in the moisture and deteriorating and cracking over time. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or the point of the putty blade. Then, use the chisel on the back of the tool or the back of the putty handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's point into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown, an errant rock or falling branch could cause a window to break or crack. Most windows can be repaired easily by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held in place with small clips made of metal called the glazier's pointed and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first remove the old one and clean the area using an abrasive and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll need use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before cutting it loose.
