The controls on their touch screen are easy to use and intuitive and their battery lasts an impressive 30 hours with ANC switched off. The headphones come with an automatic stop feature that turns the headphones off when you remove them from your head. This helps to conserve battery.

The WH1000XM5 can be used with Sony Headphones Connect, which includes a range of features that can be utilized to customize the audio experience. The app can be used to track location and customize the ambient sound effects based on your environment. The microphone can also be included for hands-free phone calls. The Sony WH-1000XM5 are compatible with music streaming via Bluetooth or via an electrical connection via the cable included. They can support aptX, HD aptX and aptX Adaptive codecs that provide high-quality audio via Bluetooth.

Like the XM4, the WH1000XM5 is light and comfortable with comfortable headbands and ear cups. They are comfortable to wear and can be worn for extended periods of time. They're also great for long flights and commutes. They're noise-cancelling headphones that can cut down background noise without compromising clarity or detail. The Sony WH1000XM5 headphones offer a good amount of bass, especially for a closed-back pair. They also have an impressive soundstage and clear distinction between vocals and instruments.

The low latency is an enormous plus. The lag is so small that it's barely noticeable, and they can also be used for casual gaming. They're not ideal for competitive video gaming, but they're great for those who wish to use them for entertainment or to make hands-free calls.

Sony is committed to including smart features into its products, and the WH-1000XM5 is not an exception. The active noise cancellation was one of the best that I've used and they have a whole range of smart features to improve your listening experience. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine upscales compressed audio to near-hi-res quality. They also work with Sony's LDAC technology which streams higher-bitrate audio via Bluetooth (although not as high-quality as the headphone DAC that's dedicated).

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Bowers & Wilkins flagship headphones which is the PX7 S2 have always been on top wireless headset lists since the introduction of the first-generation PX7 in the year 2015. This puts them in the same class as Sony WH1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort. The latest model, the PX7 S2, is an upgrade that takes the initial headphones to a new level, with improved ANC performance as well as a fresh design.

The bio-cellulose drivers that measure 40mm inside the earcups are placed in a way they are aimed directly at your eardrums. This delivers a more intimate audio experience than most other closed-back headphones. The PX7 S2 does not disappoint in this claim with a fervent zeal. Vocals cut through clearly, and bass is rich and rumbly when it's needed to be.

The PX7 S2 also performs very well with voice calls, and has a clear and crisp audio that doesn't overpower your own voice. They also come with a quick charge that allows you to return fully charged in only two hours. They're also compatible with hi-res audio, thanks to an aptX adaptive Bluetooth codec that enables them to play music with 24-bit resolution.

The noise-canceling technology as well as improved audio quality are the most important upgrades for the majority of listeners. In our tests, the PX7 S2 eliminated nearly all of our simulations of cabin noise with impressive efficiency and performed exceptionally when we performed Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus from his Grosse Messe, demonstrating excellent insight into the dynamic shifts between the solo voice, wind trio, and orchestral accompaniment.

The PX7 S2s aren't just noise-canceling, but they also include a variety of features that make them highly competitive with other top-rated headphones. They're wireless and feature Bluetooth multipoint support, meaning that you can pair with two devices at once. They also come with a built in microphone that allows hands-free calls using your phone's assistant. The build quality is durable and top-quality which means they'll last for a long time.

Of course, they're not 100% perfect. The clamp force of our test models were a little more than we'd like, and there weren't as many apps features as other options. However, these aren't major complaints. The PX7 S2s are an excellent wireless headphone that competes with the top of their class, Premium Over Ear wireless noise cancelling headphones and it's hard to imagine them being beaten by any other headphone.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal Bathys is the best option for audiophiles who value high-quality sound and are in search of an ANC headphone that is wireless. The Focal Bathys are the first ANC headphones from an French audio manufacturer to utilize Bluetooth. They offer incredible sound both in Bluetooth mode and when connected via USB to a device that supports true hi-fi listeners with up to 24-bit/192kHz.

The Bathys are stunning with their glossy finishes and swooping curvatures that are similar to Focal's closed-back Celestee and open-back Elear headphones. The Bathys are constructed of top-quality materials like magnesium and aluminum, which make them feel sturdy and comfortable. They are also worth the cost.

In Bluetooth mode, the Bathys offer a clear and lively sound quality that easily beats similar priced consumer ANC options like the Bose QC45. They can be enhanced further by using direct DAC audio mode, making them a bona fide option for true hi-fi listeners.

Using the Focal and Naim app users can alter the playback controls on their headphone, virtual assistant, and Bluetooth pairing preferences. They can choose between quiet or soft intensities for ANC and adjust the brightness of the LEDs that are on the earcups, and alter the settings for EQ. The app is not complete but it has enough functionality to be worth the download.

The only issue is the active noise cancellation, which isn't able to live up to the quality of the competition. The headphone isn't able to block out all ambient noise like the top-rated XM5 or AirPods Max, and its quality of treble isn't as good, with a muddy mid - to high frequency that impedes the instruments and vocals.

The Focal Bathys aren't the most portable headphones. The ear cups aren't foldable up and weigh slightly more than their counterparts, which means that they're not suitable for travel. The Bathys are best used at home for long listening sessions, or as a reference headset for sound engineering. The Bathys are comfortable to wear over long periods of time, despite their size and weight.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WHCH720N are excellent wireless headphones that are worth the money. The noise-cancelling technology is great and helps to reduce the background noise. They are great for those who commute or travel. They also offer an appealing high-end look with their sturdy construction and appealing matte finish.

They are similar in Sporty Design - Clear Sound: Wireless Bluetooth Earphones as Sony's more recent 1000X and XB910N headphones. They sport a slim, plastic headband, with the standard hinges for the earcups. They are light and comfortable, but they are a little too compressed for me. In the box, they have a USB-C port for charging as well as an 3.5mm socket and a decent length cable. They are compatible with multipoint Bluetooth pairing, which means you can connect them to two devices at once should you choose to.

In my tests the CH720N's hybrid noise cancelling technology did well in reducing background noise, with just few notable blips while walking through Waterloo station and London Victoria. The sound-silencers didn't zap all sounds around them however, they struggled with low-frequency sounds such as the engine rumbling sound of trains and buses.

The CH720N's Bluetooth connection was smooth and displayed a minimal harmonic distortion. I tried a range of genres and discovered they were able to handle the intricate interplay between instruments well. It did a great job of controlling the bass in rock tracks and keeping the mix in focus.

The Sony Headphones Connect App allows you to alter the CH720N's multipoint connectivity and ANC settings to suit your preferences. You can also add a variety of audio presets. You can also utilize the app to activate DSEE which boosts the quality of compressed content and enhances its audio quality.

The WH-CH720N is a good value for PS130. It isn't equipped with some of Sony's most popular features (such as Speak-to-Chat and Quick Attention) however it comes with numerous amazing features. You get access to 360 Reality Audio and a range of smart controls, as well as the aforementioned DSEE upscaling feature. The only thing that is missing is LDAC Bluetooth High-Res Audio Support I think it would have been a welcome inclusion.
