The majority of replacement window handles made of upvc include everything you require but if the original handle had pins or screws that were holding it, they must be removed. Remove the'snap-in' covers at the base of the handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a system of multipoint locks that are suitable for casement windows such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. They come with seven millimetre square spindles that can be fitted into the gearbox on the window made of uPVC. Espag handles, also known as shootbolts, offer more security than the single point lock found on older window frames.

You may have to remove any screw covers that are protecting the screws that hold the handle in place and if that's the case, use a screwdriver or pliers to remove the pins that hold the handle. After this is done then you need to disassemble the handle by taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle, and then taking away from the window.

Once you have the handle removed, you will then be in a position to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the window and take out the wedge block for cockspur which is fitted adjacent to the handle to allow the window to open. The new uPVC handles you purchased should be able slide over the cockspur block, and then into handle spindle to allow the window to be opened again. If you want to be sure that your uPVC handles are secure, it's best to replace the cockspur block with an entirely new one.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are usually found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is closed and rotates into a wedge-shaped plastic catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable versions. They are available in a range of different nose heights to suit the frame.

The handle locks using the small spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a wedge of plastic that is fixed to the frame. They are typically one-way handles however the deadlock cylinder with a locking mechanism can be added for extra security.

The replacement cockspur handles are easy to install. All you need is the correct backset and a brand new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the nose on the underside of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a myriad of variations however it is essential to measure the handle prior to purchasing the handle (see video below for how).

This kind of window handle can be replaced by unscrewing the current handle and then removing the spindle, or in some cases, the entire handle. The replacement double glazing windows handle can then be screwed in place using the help of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw comes in a brass or zinc finish, to match existing hardware. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.

Tilt and Turn

Tilt and turn windows are a premium European window design that has been around for decades in Europe but is beginning to gain traction in the US. Spade
