Why Window Repair Is Necessary

A pebble that is thrown by the lawnmowers or a large drink that is set on your glass-topped table are some of the many things that can cause cracks in glass windows. A broken window allows wind, rain insects, and other unwelcome elements to enter your house.

While it is impossible to make a cracked window completely invisible however, there are ways to fix it and stop it from getting worse.

Water Damage

The sight of water leaking through your window frame is an indication that you need to replace it. Moisture can cause rot to the wood of the frame of your window replacement. Some meticulous painters add a water-resistant preservative or thinned boiled linseed oil to the wood before painting to reduce the penetration of moisture and allow the paint to hold better.

When paint begins to chip, it's the time for a window repair. Before applying a new coat, put a drop cloth or tarp on the area you're working to catch any stray drops of paint. Get rid of any paint that has fallen off using an utility knife. Be careful not to cut the wood beneath or cut into the sheathing. Let the area dry completely after cleaning it thoroughly.

After the area has dried and dry, you can sand it with a fine-grit sanding block. This will make the surface ready for primer and create a substrate that is ready to receive paint. If you're working with lead-based paint make sure you use proper safety equipment. Clean the sanded surface and tape off any other surfaces like baseboards to shield them from paint.

Also, make sure to paint the exterior of the surface with an exterior-grade paint, and the interior with an interior grade.

Glass that has cracked
