Window Sash Repairs

Window sashes need to be inspected regularly for signs of mold, mildew, and damage. You can save future repair costs by catching problems early on, before they become out of control.

The sash is an interior frame that moves vertically up and down in windows that are open. This article will demonstrate how to perform several simple sash repair.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window repairs sashes are a great way to add an elegant appearance to your home. They are also sturdy and will last for many years if they are properly maintained. It is important to have the tools you need before you start. Start by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using pencil (Photo 1). Soften any hardened putty using the help of a heat gun set at medium and fitted with a nozzle shield. Remove the old sash, and store it in a bag labeled.

Sash Weights

Whether your window sash repairs are to replace a damaged cord or to ensure that the windows are functional, replacing worn out sash weights will improve sash operation and help reduce energy consumption. Sash weights are composed of heavy iron or lead cylinders that are encased in a concealed cavity and connected by ropes to the movable window sash. These weights function as counterbalances, which allows you to open and close the window without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. The sash-weights are typically disregarded or disabled by homeowners and turned into scrap when they fail. Consequently you may have to locate replacements.
