The Space Key is made of carbon composite material which Lamborghini, as part a research project in the year 2019 sent to the International Space Station. After it returned to Earth the carbon fiber was crafted into this unique art. The physical piece includes an NFT serial code that ties to the digital image via QR code printed on the back.

For those not in the know, NFTs are unique identifiers stored on a blockchain ledger that is linked to a digital asset, such as a picture, video or music. This allows owners to verify the authenticity, scarcity and trackability of their tokens over the internet.

The digital artwork

After weeks of social media posts hints, luxury car maker Lamborghini finally announced its first initiative for tokens that are non-fungible (NFT). It's called the Space Key, it consists of five physical items that unlock a unique digital art work NFT by a yet-to-be-identified artist. The 'collectors piece' was created in collaboration with NFTPRO(tm) and is limited to just five units. It is scheduled to be auctioned in the near future.

Each Space Key contains a block composed of carbon-fired composite material, which was sent to the International Space Station as part of a 2019 research program. After returning to Earth the space key was engraved with a QR code that links it to the digital element of the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys features a different moment that takes place at different times when the Lamborghini Ultimae takes off towards the stars. Each of the five images was captured by photographer Fabian Oefner and contains over 600 million pixels.

Oefner used a balloon equipped with a camera to capture each of the individual shots, which were then combined into the final image. The result is a photo that is out of this world. It captures both the beauty of Earth and the futuristic, hyperrealistic look of a car rising away from the Earth. The Space Keys are going to be auctioned off soon, but there is no specific date or location as of yet.

The auction

The auctions will run from February 1 to February 4. They will last 75 hours and 50 minutes, which is the amount of time it took Apollo 11 for him to leave Earth and enter Lunar orbit. Each one will be auctioned separately and the winner will receive a digital image made by renowned photographer Fabian Oefner, which captures the five different moments that the Space Key passed during its journey through space.
