Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

The battery inside your key fob will eventually run out, whether you own an ordinary Lexus Key that turns on the ignition on or an intelligent one for your vehicle that starts by pressing a button. Replacing it is as simple as a paperclip: Pop the old battery out and then insert the new one (refer to the owner's manual to see which type of battery you need) and then clip it back in the correct position.

Keys

Lexus keys aren't simple to replace and require a professional locksmith for car keys to make a working spare. This is due to the fact that every Lexus key contains microchips that need to be programmed in order to synchronise with the immobiliser of your vehicle in case it does not. If it doesn't, the vehicle will not start.

It requires a lot time and equipment that is specially designed for this procedure to be executed correctly. Each model has its own procedure for programming. Replacing keys or remotes is a pricey task that you should leave to experts, unless equipped with the proper equipment and know-how.

It doesn't matter if you have a standard key that is turned on in the ignition barrel, or an electronic key that starts your car at the click of one button Both will eventually require their batteries replaced. This can be done yourself however you'll need an inexpensive Phillips Screwdriver, 20p coin and paperclip. You will find two or three screws on the back of the key fob. Unscrew them, and then store them in a safe place (they are small and easy to lose). Remove the fob, which will reveal a circular indentation where the key made of metal will be. Remove the battery using the paperclip and insert the new battery, ensuring that it's properly inserted. Clip the the key to secure it.

Remotes

Lexus remotes and fobs can be difficult to replace and require locksmiths who are experienced and possess the proper tools. Some models require that the transponder chip contained in the key be reprogrammed in order to work with the immobiliser of the car. The chips are programmed with different methods, based on the model of Lexus. This is done with a specific device that sends an electronic signal to the chip which matches the code used to open the doors and start the engine.

Certain Lexus automobiles are built with a single piece of hardware which includes the key head and remote. They are more simple to replace since there is no separate chip. This kind of key is also cheaper.

All fobs eventually lose battery power, regardless of the kind of key. It can be frustrating however with a little bit of knowledge you can get your Lexus back in operation. A transponder-chip replacement key or fob is a process that involves multiple stages. It involves cutting the keys with precision and programming the chip to communicate with the vehicle immobiliser.

A transponder is an electronic chip with Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) that houses a set of windings (very fine wire coiled around the tube) that resemble ones found in an electric motor. These windings produce a coded message that the car is able to read. If the code is correct the car will start.

There are two kinds of transponder chip, one called the 80 bit and the other is known as a circle + (General Motors). The former type is reusable but needs to be unlocked with a special device to work in another compatible vehicle. The second kind is more difficult to use due to the fact that the old ones can be damaged, broken or toss out when keycases are changed. They can be salvaged, however, to use with a service key that does not require a battery to operate.

Immobiliser Systems

Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices which prevent thieves from starting up your vehicle. It operates by sending a signal from the vehicle to your key when you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside the key responds by sending a unique number of codes that must match the one of the vehicle in order for it to start. If the codes don't match, your engine will shut off immediately to prevent theft.

Modern smart keys and fobs come with an embedded transponder chip that stores security information in a format that cannot be duplicated. When the key or fob are inserted in the ignition, they transmit this code to the ECU. The ECU is able to compare this code with the one in its memory, and activates the fuel system and the ignition circuit if they match. If the codes do not match then the engine will not start even in the event that the ignition circuit is damaged by a thief.
