Window Sash Repairs

Weather Stripping

The first step in repair sash windows is to address weather stripping. It's found on both the sash and frame. It can cause drafts if worn out or loose. Start by identifying the brand of window and the manufacturer's date (etched on the glass's corner, or the aluminum spacers between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its size and width so that you can get replacement weather stripping that matches.

Then, you can remove the sash from its holder and place it on flat surfaces to allow you to see all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you'll also need to take off the weights and the ropes that go with them which should have slipped into the pocket of the jamb liner. After removing the sash with the utility knife, remove the old weather stripping by hand or using a putty knife.

Sash Hardware
