How to replace window pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane can cause a lot of trouble. It could be a chance to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy advantages like improved comfort, increased resale values and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself at only a fraction of the cost it would cost to hire an expert. You only need the appropriate tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated, deteriorating or broken replacing them with more modern insulated or tempered glass can improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while also preserving the original character of older homes. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can repair the window pane. In addition to a new pane, the following tools are needed such as latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty, if necessary. Wear safety glasses and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. This is best done using a pair of pliers, however, a flathead screwdriver may work in the pinch. Then, use a wooden chisel, or putty knife, to take the remainder of the old putty around the frame and sash. Be careful to not break the replace window handle sash. Be careful and slow. It is best to do this on a sturdy ladder rather than on the ground and to place someone on the sash in order to help hold it in place.

After you have removed all of the old putty, you can prepare the window frame for the new pane. Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a pull-type scraper or wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses when working. You'll require a heat gun when the window is fixed to the frame.

If you are planning to install the original sash, take off the mold that holds the old pane. Then you can sand the sash down to ensure it's level and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed, apply a new silicone caulk around the glass to ensure that it won't leak or discolor over time.

Take the glazing points out of the rabbets, or the grooves in the sash, where the glass sits. If they're hard to cut, place the hand tool, such as a heatgun over them to soften first. If you're using a heat gun, make sure not to cause damage to the railings of the sash or the sash itself by using the tool too close.

Make the bed for your new pane by removing the old glaze and putty. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, and form it into a 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. It is essential that the glass sits on the putty in all places on each side, so if you need to, lightly tap the glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior pressing it into the sash. In other cases, you'll need to putty over the crack to create an airtight seal and keep water out. After the putty is dry, clean the oily film off the glass with an abrasive and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. If you paint before the putty is fully dry, it won't form a strong seal and may leak or discolor over time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, you might be worried about the cost of a new one. In reality, replacing a single pane of glass doesn't need to be expensive when you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window could be replaced for a fraction of what it costs for a professional.

First, if you're working on a large-sized window, ensure that it is securely fastened to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques, you can complete this task easily and quick.

Once you're ready to begin, begin by removing the old window pane by removing the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in in the wood frame. They are buried beneath a glaze putty or bead that hardens to a solid wedge that holds the wood frame securely in place and hides the points.
