Replacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement windows replacement handles made of upvc come with everything you require. However the handle you had previously was fixed by pins or screws, they'll need to be removed. Next remove the'snap in' cover that is on the handle's base.

You'll need to determine what kind of window lock and handle you are replacing. This is important!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that can be installed on casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned, it activates a series locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also referred as shootbolts, offer more security than the single point lock that is found on older window frames.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are typically found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle turns and closes onto the receiver, which is a wedge-shaped plastic catch (not to be confused with timber window seal replacement latches that are also covered in this section). The handles are lockable or nonlockable. They are available in a range of different nose sizes to match the existing frame.

The handle locks with a slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a wedge made of plastic which is attached to the frame. These are usually single-way handles, however a locking deadlock can be added to give additional security.

The replacement cockspur handles are easy to install. All you need is the correct backset and a new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside of the nose of the handle. As a general rule Aluminium window frames tend to have a 9mm backset, while UPVC uses 21mm. There are a variety of other options though so it is important to take a measurement before purchasing the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle, or in certain instances, the entire handle assembly can be removed by removing the handle. The replacement handle is then installed with a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish, to match the existing hardware. There is also an option for a self-locking pozidriv screw.

Tilt and turn

The premium European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for decades, but it's only just beginning to catch on in the United States. When tilt and turn windows are closed, they are locked like any other fixed window. The sash can be opened fully by turning the handle 90or 180@. This allows for complete air circulation which is especially beneficial in rooms with a lot of draft or where smoke or other smells can accumulate. It also makes cleaning the exterior of the glass much simpler because it can be done from inside the house which usually requires ladders that are a bit shaky.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also very safe. They are difficult to open when they are locked in the closed position. They also have double seals that keep rainwater out of your home while in the tilted position, or in swing. This feature is especially useful for older homes, where burglars tend to target traditional windows that can be opened using side hinges.

Spade

There are a variety of handles that can be put in on double-glazed windows made of upvc. There are two main kinds of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other options include tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles as well as monkey tail handles, replacement uPVC window handles and various other styles. The type of handle that you select will depend on your preferences as well as the type of windows you have.
