In the box out of the box, the S7 Max Ultra is very easy to set up. Once you plug it into the wall it will prompt you to map out your home with sensors. It will then continue to use that information to avoid obstacles. During our tests, it avoided getting caught on power cords and long curtains as well as dog toys. It isn't perfect though and sometimes ran into obstacles such as tangled wires or the odd toy or book.

The S7 Max Ultra can be controlled via its smartphone app. This is where you can find all the sophisticated features which set it apart from other robot vacuums and mop machines. This includes room-specific cleaning and mopping settings, a scheduling planner mopping and vacuuming ranges, as well as integrations with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for smart home integration. The S7 Max Ultra's comprehensive features allow it to perform everything a standard robot can do and more, but for a fraction of the cost.

The S7 Max Ultra's mopping capability was good too, although not the best self emptying robot vacuum for pet hair we've seen. It utilized the special microfiber mop pad, which absorbs liquids and uses sonic vibration technology to scrub floors up to 3000 times per minute, which was a bit faster than the X1 Omni's circular pads that rotate at 180 revolutions per minute. The S7 Max Ultra's ReactiveAI 2.0 obstacle recognition system was excellent. During our tests, it did not get stuck on anything and stayed clear of power cords, curtains, and other potential obstructions all the time.

2. Narwal Freo

Vaccuming and mopping your floors is one of those chores that everyone dreads but is necessary for maintaining a clean home. It's a messy and often smelly task that can be difficult to finish, since it involves dustbins, dirty water and the necessity to ensure that any debris or hair doesn't clog the traps or brushes. That is why mopping and vacuuming robots are becoming very popular. However, a lot of these devices still require users to manually empty the dust bin, wash and rinse the mop pads. This can be quite a hassle especially if you have to do this a few times during the cleaning process or after each cleaning session. That is why we're happy to see that a number of manufacturers are introducing self-emptying robots that make the entire process more hassle-free.

The Narwal Freo is the latest addition to this category of robotic vacuum self emptying cleaners and it has a plethora of new sensors, software, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its class. This includes the trademarked DirtSense technology as well as the Smart-Swing feature, both of which help to detect the floor surface being cleaned and automatically adjusts the cleaning mode depending on the kind of flooring it is. The Freo also detects levels of dirtiness and automatically washes mops once they are full, which increases the efficiency of subsequent cleaning sessions, as they are not returning to soiled areas.

Another great improvement that the Freo has over its predecessor is the capability to direct it's operation via an LCD touchscreen on its base station, in addition to using the smartphone app. This is the first robot vacuum and mop combination that has this feature. It's a great feature even if you don't use the app. You can even adjust the routing during the session by using the LCD screen controls.

The Narwal Freo also does a decent job of keeping the noise down when it is working and registering just 63dB when it is in suction mode. The Freo's maintenance is not completely hands-free however. You will need to clean the primary brush roll and the side brushes regularly.

3. Ecovacs Deebot T9+

The Ecovacs Deebot T9+ (available at The Good Guys for $1279) is one of the most efficient self-emptying robot vacuum and mop combinations on the market. It can map out your home and vacuum and mop while detecting and avoiding obstructions. It can even spray an air freshener.

The app generates a map of your home which can be used to clean. It's simple to set up. You can then use the app to select specific rooms or custom areas to clean. You can also choose the time of day you'd like it start working, so your floors are clean while you're away or asleep.

In our tests in our tests, we found the T9+ to be very adept at navigating around obstacles. However, it does have an inclination to take slightly manic routes around the house, which usually resulted in it ending up back at the same location it had begun cleaning just minutes earlier. This didn't happen often however it was enough to be noticed and something worth noting down.

The T9+ comes complete with a range of accessories like the robot cleaner, a docking-station and an automatic emptying station. The mopping module as well as the dust bin replacement are available separately.

The iRobot Combo j7+ robot is a fantastic choice for cleaning floors. It's a mop and vacuum all in one, and it has both excellent obstacle avoidance and home navigation. It can map your clean and tidy areas without damaging furniture or walls. The app allows you to create zones to mark areas that require to be cleaned and those that you don't want it to be cleaned. You can also set boundaries for no-mop and non-sweep zones.

IRobot's iAdapt technology 2.0 is a major component of what makes Combo j7+ smart. The front camera of the majority of the robots made by iRobot is used to prevent hazards like pet waste and power cords. Additionally the iAdapt 2.0 allows the Combo J7+ to detect dirt levels and target these areas more than other.

I was able to control the Combo J7+ using the mobile application, which is intuitive and well designed. It is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa so you can start a cleaning by voice. The only issue I encountered was that the Combo j7+'s smaller water tank means you have to refill it often or limit its mopping to smaller areas and use eco-mode more often.

Another issue is that the Combo j7+'s dust bin is small and you must empty it manually. The Combo mop pads are also less efficient than other brands. This is a shame as this robot is otherwise excellent.
