A high-quality robot vacuum can make a significant difference in keeping allergens such dust and pet hair under control. Different models are not the same.

If you're looking to purchase an animal-friendly vacuum or just a great robot to supplement your other cleaner, there are plenty of options.

1. Eufy RoboVac G30 Edge

The G30 Edge is the newest model in Eufy's line of budget robot vacuum and mop Pet hair vacuum cleaners. It's a shiny black affair with rose-gold and blue accents that looks like an iPhone. This model is easier to use than the previous models and has features such as BoostIQ that automatically boosts suction power for better cleaning of all surfaces. Smart navigation can be used to avoid the repetition of the same areas which is an issue that is common with bounce-navigation.

It does a great job of removing pet hair and crumbs off hard floors, but it falls in comparison to the best robot vacuum and mop combo for pet hair models when it comes to cleaning up dust on carpet. In our tests the G30 Edge missed 74% of the flour on hard floors, and 26 percent on carpet which is a bit disappointing.

The G30 Edge is unique in its ability to map out your home with an electronic map. This lets it remember which spaces it has already cleaned and prevents it from returning to those rooms which is a major problem with other robots that require the use of old-fashioned magnetic tape to mark off zones that aren't allowed.

The G30 Edge also has other conveniences. It has an "Find My Robot" mode that blasts out loud music until it is found and a directional keyboard that lets you move the robot. It also has an automatic return feature that will send the robot back to its charging station if the battery is running low. This is a safety feature.

2. Neato Botvac D-Shape

The Neato Botvac D-Shape robot is a powerful machine with a long list of intelligent features. It is able to clean floors well, and it can climb on carpets with a high pile easily. The app comes with advanced features like boundary lines remote access to the robot as it is working, robot vacuum and mop pet hair and many other options.

This model is the most recent in a long series of robots from Neato and has a distinctive "D" shape when seen from above. This design comes with a variety of advantages that include an improved corner cleaning system and a bigger dust bin than most other models. The D-shape design also allows the robot to access furniture more easily than robots with a circular design.

When first starting a cleaning cycle when it is first started, the D-Shape will pause briefly to use spinning infrared lasers to scan and evaluate the area. Then it will work in a grid, gradually moving from one area to the next until the entire floor is cleaned. This method is more thorough and efficient than competitors' random method.

The D-Shape's design allows it to have a large, 700ml dust bin as opposed to 400-600ml for robots with similar prices. This capacity increase will help you save time and effort by reducing the frequency of emptying the bin. The D-Shape also has a flat front that helps it to navigate around obstacles such as chairs and tables. In our tests, we discovered that the D-Shape got stuck under a four-legged stool as well as under an electrical cord that was exposed. However it was able to to free itself each time.

3. Roomba I3+ EV

The i3+ EVO's obstacle-avoiding capability isn't as effective as the other robots we tested, and it frequently encountered objects during our tests, such as handbags, shoes and pet toys prior to continuing its journey. It also had issues with coarse sea salt that it was able to blow around instead of taking it up.

The i3+ EVO is loaded with features that make it worth the extra money over other Roomba models. These include the ability to self-empty the bin and more advanced control with an app. You can schedule cleanings and set up custom routines. You can also set up no-go zones to prevent the robot from entering certain areas. The smart scheduling system will suggest extra cleaning during allergy seasons, and according to the routine you follow. The navigational system is unreliable, however, and sometimes vacuums in erratic lines such as diagonals or Robot vacuum and Mop pet hair zigzags rather than parallel to walls.

4. Shark AI Self-Empty, XL

With detailed mapping technology, this intelligent robot is able to know your home better than you do. It's an excellent value. The Shark AI Self-Empty XL is less expensive than many other robots on our list and yet comes with advanced features like mapping and an automatic self-emptying trash bin that holds a good amount of trash. We tested it in a house with a mix of bare carpet and low-pile flooring and found it to move and clean exceptionally well, including getting into corners. The vacuum also does a good job of picking up pet hair from carpets but it's not equipped with the same amount of power as some of our top picks.

The Roborock S4 Max, however, is more durable, recharges quicker than the Shark and offers a broader variety of automation options and scheduling options as well as support for "no-go zones". Shark is still a great option if you're looking to buy something less expensive or prefer to manage and control your system via your phone rather than the remote.

5. Bissell SpinWave Dry and Wet

It's not easy to find a machine that can combine mopping and vacuuming, but this one does it. The dual tank system of this robot lets it mop or vacuum at the touch of a button. In our tests, it was able to easily switch between surfaces and was excellent at getting pet fur off hardwood floors and carpets. It also comes with an edge-sweeping tool to remove hairs from baseboards and walls.

This is a great choice if you are looking for a model that's inexpensive and has a few extra features. It was able to negotiate obstacles with ease during our testing and is controlled via an app or voice. It has a large dustbin for the collection of messes before they're filled. It can take up to 166 minutes to complete its work however, it is quicker than other robots we have tested.

The highlight of this robot is the front-facing camera that lets you monitor your home's cleanliness using a live map in the app. This is especially useful in the event that you need to locate a specific item or if your kids have spilled glitter from their decorations all over your floor. It will save you a lot frustration by finding that lost item immediately. Additionally the battery that is fade-free can last up to 130 minutes on a single charge.

6. Roomba 694

It is less efficient on hardwood floors. Its side brush scatters huge cereal pieces that stick to the floor instead of vacuuming. It also had a difficult to collect table salt from a dry floor, with many grains skidding across the floor and beyond its reach.

It allows voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant through an external device (sold separately). It analyzes your cleaning habits and creates custom schedules. Cliff Detect and an edge-sweeping brush ensure that it can get into difficult-to-access corners. Dirt Detect sensors alert it to areas that are heavily soiled. Its battery can last for around 60 minutes and it has a self-emptying trash bin. The pricier iRobot J7 is more sophisticated and is better on all surfaces. It is also more durable, has a larger dustbin, can charge faster, and can navigate obstacles like electrical cords better.
