How to replace window Pane Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window is a nuisance. This can be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones to enjoy advantages like improved comfort, increased resale values and lower utility costs.

This is a project you could do yourself for only a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. You'll need only the proper tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with more modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while also preserving the historical integrity of older homes. The process of replacing the window pane is simple and can be done by homeowners with basic hand tools. You will also require a replacement window pane, glazier's suggestions, pliers, replace window pane and latex glaze putty. If needed, you can use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Before starting, put on gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Take out any broken glass pieces that remain. It is recommended to use pliers however a flathead could be useful equally. Then, use a wood chisel, or putty knife, to remove the remaining old putty around the frame and the sash. Be careful to not break the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. It is best to do this on a stable ladder rather than on the ground, and to have someone standing below the sash to help hold it in place.

Once you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame for the new pane. Find the width and the height of the sash opening, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Take these measurements to an hardware store or home center, and have a piece of stock glass cut to size. Alternatively, you can cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

After installing the new glass, apply a small amount of caulking to the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then install a glazier's point on each side of the frame to hold the pane in its place. The points shouldn't be too tight as to cause friction between the sash and frame but they should not be too loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, you must knead it thoroughly until it becomes soft and free of lumps. Then make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner and Replace window Pane ensure that it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular pieces of metal that allow glass to be secured into the window frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. Install the new window sash once the glazing compound has dried. The first step is to coat the wood with a thick layer of linseed. This will prevent the newly-created putty from drying out and cracking due to the moisture it absorbs. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your putty knife, then use the chisel, or the back end of the knife to gently hammer the new sash and glazier's tips into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches around the frame's perimeter.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown or a rock that is errant or a fallen branch can cause a window to break or crack. Most windows can be replaced by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held into position by a small metal clip, also known as a glazier’s point and putty. This compound is also called glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first take out the old one and clean up the area using an abrasive and the pull-type paint scraper or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll need to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive before prying it free.

If you're planning to install your original sash, remove the molding that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready to receive new caulk. Once the sash is put back in place then, you can apply a silicone caulk over the glass. This will ensure that it won't leak over time or discolor.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is. If they're difficult to work out, you can try holding the hand tool, such as a heat gun over them to soften them before you do. When using a heating tool, be sure to not scratch the sash or its railings.

Once the old glaze points and putty are removed, prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, and form it to be about 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If you need to, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has damaged, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue based on solvents to seal the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. If not, you'll have to apply putty on the crack to form an impervious seal to keep water out. After the putty has dried then clean the oily film off the glass using an abrasive and allow it to completely dry before painting. Paint after the putty has dried completely. It will not create a solid seal and could discolor or leak over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken piece of glass. But the truth is that replacing a single glass pane doesn't have to break the bank if you do it yourself. Even a double-paned window replacement panes could be replaced for a fraction of the price it would cost a professional.

If you are working with a large glass window, first make sure it is securely fixed to the frame. By using the correct tools and techniques to make this task relatively easy and quick.

When you're ready to start, begin by removing the old window by prying out the metal glazing points that are connected to it. These are basically small metal triangles which function as "nails" that hold the window in within the frame of wood. They are placed under a bead of glazing putty, which is then cured to form a solid, molded wedge that holds the window firmly in place and conceals the points.

Once you have the old pane taken away clean the surrounding frame and wood. Sand them down to bare wooden surfaces, allowing you to paint the frames the same color. After sanding the wood you can apply a layer flax oil. This will help extend its life.

Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure you get a precise size for the new pane. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass during seasonal changes. Take these dimensions to the hardware or home improvement store, and they will have cut the glass for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
