Lidar cameras, cameras, and 3D mapping sensors are powerful devices for robot vacuums to can map their environment. They provide elite obstacle-avoidance. However, some prefer to keep things simple with a straightforward vac that's inexpensive.

In our tests, this vac produced an editable floor map in both small and large rooms, with good accuracy. It also picked up messes well and worked efficiently in "No-Go" zones that we set.

1. Neato Botvac D4

If you're looking for the convenience of a robot vacuum, but without having to make many sacrifices in terms of performance, this Neato is a great choice. The D4 is an excellent choice for those who are looking for an automated vacuum that comes with many features. It has nifty mapping and navigation tools as well as smart home integration. It also comes with an app that is simple to use.

You can set up the bot by plugging it into its base, and connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, giving it a name, etc.). When it's fully charged you can then start a cleaning cycle.

Once you've got your D4 up and running and you're ready to make use of the app to create an automatic schedule or manually start cleaning whenever you want. You can also control it with your voice using Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you have an Apple Watch, you can start cleaning sessions by simply pressing the wrist.

This model performed well in our lab tests on both hard and robot Vacuum lidar carpeted flooring, accumulating 91.3 percent of debris from serpentine paths. However, it's not as great at edge and corner cleaning as more expensive models--its side sensors keep the D4 approximately 1.5 inches from walls. Also, it doesn't have the side-sweeping brush on all robotic cleaners. The raised turret means that it cannot be used under furniture with low clearance. It does, however, robot vacuum Lidar support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to signal the D4 not to move there. The battery life of 75 minutes is also fairly average. This is an affordable price to pay for the convenience of this model.

2. Roomba iRobot 990 from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the flagship robot vacuums with lidar in the lineup of the company with a promise of top performance and connected features. The retail price of the 980 is $800/PS899 however you can usually find it for less online.

The 980 is the most advanced of all our top picks. It comes with a HEPA-filter that is able to capture dust particles and allergens to improve air quality inside your home. It is also compatible with a wide range of flooring types such as tiles and hardwoods.

One of the most prominent characteristics of the 980 is its top-mounted camera and SLAM sensor that allows it to navigate more efficiently than other Roombas even in tight spaces such as hallways and corners. iRobot calls this technology iAdapt 2.0 and it uses snapshots from the camera to draw an internal map. This helps the 980 keep its track of its location, to ensure that it doesn't spend cleaning time on areas that it has already cleaned.

iRobot also added new features that are smarter, such as a spot clean function that lets you designate an area of your house as off-limits to the 980. This isn't the most advanced or largest we tested, but it's effective and is a great addition. The 980 can also be controlled using voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. However, the process of granting commands isn't always instantaneous. The robot may make a request in a queue that could take several minutes to complete.

The Roomba can also return to its base station when it's done cleaning, making sure it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is only available on the 980 and it's a nice addition that makes the otherwise fairly expensive machine more comfortable to own.

3. iRobot Roomba 985

iRobot Roomba is designed to make your floors cleaner, more beautiful and more efficient with its powerful cleaning system, smart navigation, and smart integration with other iRobot devices. Its patented dirt-detection system alerts you when areas need extra attention. Smart sensors keep it away from dangerous obstacles and stairs. It will also recharge itself automatically and continues cleaning until the task is complete. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology lets it navigate an entire level of your home, keeping track of where it's been and what rooms it has yet to clean.

Its low-profile allows it to reach under carpets, furniture and other items, where dust and pet hair are usually hidden. It can also clean dirt from corners and edges, unlike many robot vacuums. It's also simple to plan cleaning sessions from any location, using the iRobot app or by using your voice using Alexa and Google Assistant.

The iRobot Roomba 985 uses the highest quality lithium-ion batteries that last longer and charge faster than other brands. The battery comes with 12 months of warranty and is guaranteed to perform under standard operating conditions. The high-impact ABS and Polycarbonate plastic construction gives it strength. This makes it able to avoid pet feces and wires much better than other robotic vacuums we've reviewed, such as the EcovacsN8Pro, Roborock S6MaxV and many others.

It's also the most powerful vacuum, capable of taking on messes with deeper debris and more pet hair unlike other mid-range models, such as the Roomba 960. This is because of the cleaner's bigger counter-rotating brushes as well as a more powerful motor that has more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum, and comes with recharge and resume. However, it does not have the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It also doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 utilizes to track objects and avoid obstacles. It can't access features like in-app containment or save maps.

The iRobot isn't equipped with mopping capabilities. This might not be an issue if you're just looking for a top-quality vacuum, but it is an important disadvantage for anyone who is looking to purchase an iRobot that is a hybrid.

It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 - it holds 2.5 liters of debris, which is enough to last for 60 days.

5. iRobot Roomba 960

The 960 is a less costly alternative to the 980. It offers the same capabilities however, in a smaller package. It works well on carpeted and bare floors and is able to pick up dirt and food crumbs. It's also adept in navigating around obstacles and avoiding them. It's capable of cleaning dirt that has been embedded.

The robot uses iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This lets it move around the area efficiently and avoid becoming stuck. It can see the floor as well as the objects and obstacles using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It even has a low profile that lets it go under couches and tables. It's also able to return to its dock to recharge when necessary.

While it lacks some advanced features such as map-saving or selective room cleaning however, its navigation is superior to most other robots. It also has a larger dirt bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home app for iOS or Android lets you control the 960. It offers a variety of automation features which include the ability to set cleaning preferences, a schedule, trigger spot cleanings and track the battery's condition. You can also track the location of the vacuum, and receive notifications if its dirt container is empty. The 960 also supports voice commands using Alexa and Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 is an excellent choice for the majority of households. It's well-built, has lower recurring costs and has a bigger dirt compartment, and can be charged more quickly than the more expensive RoboVac 11. But if you're looking for a less expensive alternative that can perform the same on carpets and floors look into the Neato Botvac D7.
