The best automatic vacuum cleaner way to keep your home tidy is to use a robotic vacuum. It can remove dust, pet hair, and other debris from the surface before it causes a bigger problem.

Certain robots can connect to smart assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant to provide a hands-free experience. Look for models that can be recharged and continue cleaning the area they left.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop is a great choice for many homes. It vacuums and mops well and is extremely navigable using both GPS and laser sensors, and comes with a variety of features and controls accessible through the app. It has a handy feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require additional attention, and Keep Out zones in areas you don't want it to be. It also gets software updates, like all Roomba products, which improve the quality of the product over time.

It's expensive, but it's also one of the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It comes with a powerful battery that can vacuum a large home in under two hours. It can switch between vacuuming and mopping by pressing one button. And, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically emptys into an even larger waste container on top of its charging dock.

It also has many other features, including intelligent obstacle avoidance, which utilizes cameras in conjunction with processor-powered smarts in order to recognize obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning process. In my tests it was the best in avoiding objects such as power cables. It's not as precise at detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

Although Anker-owned Eufy has earned a name for itself in budget robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that can also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that offers a range of modern features and can compete with much more expensive models.

Laser navigation is the main selling point of this machine. Previous Eufy devices have created an approximate map of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into things but the X8's laser mapping system is far more precise. It also takes significantly less time to construct an accurate map of your space and stores multiple maps, which is great for multi-floor homes.

The X8 is still a good vacuum for floors that are not clean and can sling debris over its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The Tyres of the X8, despite their circular shape, are adept at grabbing corners and edges. It's not a great kitty litter eater, however, with our tests showing it can only remove about 90% of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that aren't too big however, you aren't able to control how much water it uses, which will limit its effectiveness for more serious stains. It does a good job of removing hair from pets. It has a higher pick-up rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, efficient appliances. It has a beautiful design, excellent navigation and an impressive cleaning power. But it has some operational hiccups that keep it from ranking as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

Like iRobot's latest models, the RX2 comes with dual-sensor mapping that utilizes an LIDAR sensor to map an area and a pair of 3D scanning cameras to identify and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once the room is defined and assigned, mops you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also begin cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, watch live feeds from the cameras onboard and more on the main screen.

The sensors of the RX2 work well, registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping power are top of the line and cleans up surface debris from medium-pile carpeting and embedded dust on floors with no floor. It's not the fastest robot on the market. As with many others it's not a great climber and has issues with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

This budget robovac is a robot that looks just like the other, but it has a few more features and is more efficient. Its intelligent mapping system creates 2D and 3D maps of your home and uses them to avoid obstacles and navigate. It can even detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump detector and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum away from steps makes it one our most agile vacuums.

In our tests, it easily could climb over the thick shag rug and didn't end up stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation skills were also impressive; its composite score in carpet and bare floors topped the competition and it took in 98.5 percent of surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than the competition's. There is a cleaning button at the top and you can either start it with the app or voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule daily or weekly cleanings, set up no-go zones, and look up its cleaning history. Ion is covered in a stylish dark gray plastic that feels and looks beautiful in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easy to empty and cleaning the filter is just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic robotic vacuum that is simple and has no frills for a reasonable cost, the Eufy11S might be your best bet. It's not equipped with some advanced features such as Alexa integration and digital mapping, which are available in more expensive models. However, if you don't require these functions, you can save money.

The robot is easy to install and use. It does not require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However, it does come with a remote control which allows you to choose between different modes and adjust suction level. It also lets you manually send the robovac off for scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, we discovered that the 11S was extremely effective at getting dirt and fur from hard floors and low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it possible to get under low-hanging furniture and other items that some larger robots are unable to reach. It was able to go effortlessly over door thresholds and move from one floor type to another.

The 11S, as with other robots, will also eat some items, including cords and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you can keep these objects off the ground and using a cord organizer if possible. It also suggests cleaning the dustbin periodically replacing the filters, and washing or changing the brushes when needed.

Roomba 990 by iRobot

The Roomba is the flagship model of iRobot's robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's the most powerful robot vacuum you can buy. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is something to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than most competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. It's a dependable robot vacuum, even if its app isn't the most responsive and the 980 spins out when it comes across cables.

We really like the 980, because it makes use of its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home.
