It also gets software updates, similar to all Roomba products, which improve the quality of the product over time.

It's costly, but it's is also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It has a high-powered battery that can vacuum a large home in under two hours. It can switch between vacuuming and mopping with the press of a button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, it automatically emptys into a larger waste container above its charging dock.

It also has a number of other features, such as intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras in conjunction with processor-powered smarts to recognize obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the best at avoiding objects such as power cables. However, it isn't as reliable at detecting pet waste and Robot vacuum brands other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While the Anker-owned Eufy has earned its name in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. This is changing with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive array of modern features and can compete well against much more expensive models.

The laser navigation system is the primary selling point of this machine. Previous Eufy devices have constructed a rough map of your home utilizing infrared sensors and bumping into things but the X8's laser mapping system is more precise. You can also change the cleaning modes, initiate an automatic clean, or view a live feed of the onboard cameras from the main screen.

The RX2's sensors are effective in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping abilities are exceptional, getting rid of surface litter from carpets with medium pile and also removing dust that has been deposited on floors. However, it's not the most agile robot Vacuum brands on the market. It's not the best climber, and it has problems with metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy a robot vacuum for the ease of setting a schedule on an app and then forgetting about it for weeks at an time. It's important that a robot is capable of the task and that's why our ZDNet staff has tested and looked over some of the most popular models to help you select the right one for your house.

4. Shark ION

This budget-friendly robovac looks just like your standard robot, however it's upgraded in performance and features. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses them to avoid obstacles and navigate. It can even identify common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump sensor, and an infrared sensor for dropping that keeps it away from the stairs is what makes it one of the most agile vacuums we've tested.

In our tests, it easily climbed over thick shag rugs and didn't get stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigational skills were also impressive and its overall score on carpet and bare floors beat out the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of the surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top. You can access it via the app or via voice command with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set up a schedule for weekly or daily cleaning, set areas that are not allowed to be cleaned, and check its cleaning history.
