Replacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement windows handles made of upvc include everything you need. However the handle you had previously was secured by screws or pins, they'll need to be removed. Take off the "snap-in" cover at the base of your handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a set of multipoint locks fitted to casement window types such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. The handle is fitted with a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into an internal gearbox that is mounted on the uPVC window. If you're planning to replace your existing uPVC window handle with an espag type handle, you'll have to determine the size of the spindle that is installed and measure it from the base of the handle to ensure you purchase the correct replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and can assist you in finding the ideal uPVC handle for your home.

You may need to remove any screws that protect the screws that hold the handle in place and if that's the case, you can use a screwdriver to remove these or pliers to remove the pins holding the handle. After you have removed the screws or pins that hold the spindle together you can take it apart to disassemble the handle.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is turned and then closes on the receiver, which is a wedge-shaped plastic catch (not to be confused with timber window latches that are also covered in this section). The handles are lockable or nonlockable. They are available in a variety of different nose sizes to match the frame.

The handle locks with an slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a wedge of plastic which is attached to the frame. They are usually one-way handles however a locking deadlock cylinder can be added for extra security.

The replacement handles for cockspurs are easy to install. All you require is the correct backset and replacement windows a new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the nose on the underside of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. This type of window handle can be replaced by simply unscrewing the existing handle and taking off the spindle, or in some cases, the entire handle. The new handle will then be screwed into place with two pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screws are available in either zinc or brass finishes to match the hardware, and there is the possibility of a self-locking version.

Turn and Tilt

Tilt and turn windows are a coveted European window style that has been in use for decades in Europe, but is only beginning to gain traction in the US. The windows are a combination of 3 window styles - tilt, in-swing, and pivot. This makes them ideal for older homes as they can be used to offer more ventilation than standard window handles replacement types.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. Tilt and turn windows are also very secure. They are difficult to open when they are locked in the closed position. They also feature double seals that keep rainwater out of your home while it is in the tilted position or swing. This feature is particularly useful for older homes where intruders tend to target traditional windows which are opened with side hinges.

Spade

There are a few different types of window handles that can be fitted to double-glazed windows made of upvc. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles, then there's also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles and monkey tail handles. The type of handle that you pick will be based on your preferences and the type of windows you have.
