It also has an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours and returns to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

It also has an option called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it identify the areas in your home that require attention and make a tidy path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys abandoned on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out from under things. Roomba also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to its real-world location if it begins to drift away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which do not have bristles, and thus tend to resist tangles better than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can be placed under beds or couches with low sides. They're specifically designed to make this model more adaptable to different kinds of floors.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class Its main feature is the incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature, which uses a camera to spot bits of embedded dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around a room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it also scored a high score on mid pile too. It did a good job picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots we've reviewed despite the minor drawbacks. It's also not as expensive as other top-of the-line models. It still has a lot of features that we'd expect to see in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into a wall socket or mop robot vacuum its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it work. It will automatically return to its dock when the battery runs out or is full of debris, and it also has indicators at the top of the device to indicate that the bin is full, it's time to recharge, or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
