How to Replace Window Pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane is a nuisance. This could be an opportunity to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy benefits like increased comfort, increased resale values and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself for a less than what it would cost to hire an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Then, use the chisel that is on the back of the putty tool or the back of the handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's tip into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you, an errant rock or a fallen branch can cause a window pane to crack or break. The majority of windows can be replaced by installing a new piece. The glass is held in place by tiny metal clips known as the glazier's pointed and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using a rag, a pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. You'll need a heating gun if the window is glued to the frame.

If the new pane is damaged, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue based on solvents to fill in the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to putty over the crack to create a tight seal and keep water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film off the glass and allow it to dry completely before you paint. Paint before the putty has dried completely. It will not form a good seal and could discolor or leak over time.

First, if you are working on a large-sized window, make sure it is securely fixed to the frame. This can be made relatively simple and fast using the proper tools and techniques.
