This is a significant improvement over the previous model that relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean the entire area three times at various angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a great job getting rid of pet hair, but had a difficult time with the thick and Home robot Vacuum long pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a top model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll see in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do the work. It will return to its dock when its battery is out or it's full of debris, and it has indicators at the top to indicate when its bin is full or it's time to recharge, or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
