How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can cause a lot of trouble. It can also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows to enjoy benefits such as more comfort, higher the value of resales and lower utility bills.

Apply a small amount of glazing compound on the edges of the new glass and in the rabbet grooves, to seal and protect them. Let it dry completely and cure.

Install the new window sash when the glazing compound has dried. The first step is to coat the wood with a thick coat of linseed oil. This will prevent the new putty from soaking up moisture and drying out and cracking over time. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your knife, and then use the chisel, or the back end of the knife to gently press the new sash and glazier's points into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown or an unintentional rock, or a fallen branch can cause a window to break or crack. Most windows can be repaired easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held into place by a small metal clip, also known as the glazier's point, and putty. This compound is also known as glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first take out the old one and clean up the area with the help of a rag, a pull-type paint scraper or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while you do this work. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll need to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive prior to taking it off.

If you're planning to install the original sash, take off the molding that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready to receive new caulk. When you are ready to start with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it.
