Avon Books - A Brief History

In 1941, the American News Company (ANC) established Avon Publications as a paperback book publisher. It began with a focus on comics, but then expanded to include a wide range of genres, particularly romance.

Avon is now owned by HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary is currently underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon was a mass-market company and published westerns, mysteries, and romances with colorful covers. Their books were cheaper than the Pocket books and targeted women who could read between cooking and cleaning.

Avon published digest-format paper (the size of the current short story magazines) in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and many others. These publications contain a variety of authors who are sought-after by collectors. They include A. Merritt and James M. Cain as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

By the mid-1950s, Avon was selling over 20 million books each year. Their 25-cent "G" series included the popular genres of westerns, whodunits, and the boy-meets girl stories that were so popular in those days. Avon also had 35 cents "T" series that contained the standbys of science fiction, mystery and other genres.

The company's emphasis on popularity led them to publish ghost stories, sexually-suggestive love stories and fantasy novels in its early days which were quite different from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus moved to more mainstream fiction.

Today, Avon is the world's largest female-focused beauty and fiction company with representatives on five continents and over 100 countries. They are a major publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers, focusing on crime, thrillers suspense, uplifting general fiction and saga. The company is proud to have an established history of women-focused books and has helped to pave the way for December 2023 women entrepreneurs around the globe. It is a pioneer in sales, marketing, and innovation.

Avon Impulse

Avon was founded in 1941 as a publisher of paperback books and comics. They later focused on romance novels. The company was founded by Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams. Meyers hired brothers and sisters to run the company. He wanted to make a competitor to Pocket Books. They achieved this by printing paperbacks that were more affordable with a mass appeal and luxurious covers.

Avon reached its peak as a romance publisher novels in the 1970s. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, Avon book march a sexy novel that spent 33 weeks at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list and was published. They also published the sexy books of Rosemary Rogers, including Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies. These were the first times that a single novel was the top of the charts for this genre.

The company was purchased by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst would put a focus on the company's romance offerings which led to it growing to become one of the largest publishers of this genre. The company continued to publish cheap paperbacks in popular themes, such as westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance boosted their profits.

Avon is still publishing romance novels today. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that publishes both ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint is open to submissions from writers who aren't represented by an agent. It also allows authors to test their boundaries without worrying about the publishing industry's reaction.

In 1999, Avon merged with Harper Collins. Avon's paperbacks for hardcover and non-romance collections were transferred to the company's sister imprint Morrow which left Avon as a publisher of romance novels. Avon Books was eventually renamed and is still a significant part of HarperCollins. The catalog now includes more than just classic romances but also women's literature and sagas.
