We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that have been placed on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out from under the furniture. It also has a camera that snaps the Roomba back to its original position when it starts to drift from its intended location.

iRobot has also included an additional set of rollers beneath the Roomba that do not have bristles, which makes them more likely to withstand the tangles that previous models. They are also taller and can fit under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make the model more adaptable to different floor types.

The Roomba 980 stands out from other high-end models by its brand new dirt detection feature that makes use of a camera in order to detect embedded dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous version, that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very high score on mid pile too. It did a good job of picking up pet hair, but it was struggling with extremely thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's not even far from being as costly as some of the other top models on this list. It has a lot of features you would expect from a top model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or home integrations you'll get from other top rated robot vacuum models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use as soon as you are ready to. After removing the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button and let it get to work.
